Mr. John Platter ------- 3rd wife is Kirsten (Larson) Thomsen ~ Nelson (Married: 1913) ------- John Nelson, Pioneer Citizen, Died Suddenly Last Thursday Thursday morning Graettinger people learned with feelings of genuine sorrow of the sudden death of John Nelson, one of the old and respected pioneer citizens of this community. Though advanced in years Mr. Nelson was one of the robust men of the community and the news of his death was difficult to realize. Thursday morning at 4:30 he was stricken with apoplexy. Dr. P. J. Hession was hastily summoned but there was nothing that medical skill could do and it was realized that Mr. Nelson's long and useful life was rapidly drawing to a close. Relatives were summoned to the bedside and the stricken man passed away two hours later. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon. Services were conducted at the residence at one o'clock, The Rev. S. O. Sande of the Norweigian Lutheran church of this city, and the Rev. H. P. K. Hansen of the Danish Lutheran church of South Walnut officiating. Both pastors gave brief funeral orations. Rev. Sande spoke on death and preparedness for it. He told of how the hand of death is no respector of persons, it comes to the cottage as well as to the palace, it casts it shadow over the snow houses of the north as well as the tent of the Bedouin Arab He asked his listeners to be prepared for this journey through the valley of death for no one knows the hour or the day. Rev. Hansen spoke on the saving grace of god, stating that no individual, no church, no state no nation can save the soul of the individual unless he should possess the grace of god. This is one of the fundamentals of the Christian religion and one that should be given serious consideration by those who are blessed with health and strength but who tomorrow may have passed to that land beyond the grave. He asked that all should lead such lives that god's beckoning hand would call them to him instead of warning them away. The sudden passing away of Mr. Nelson was another example of the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death. The large home and the spacious lawn were packed with hundreds of sorrowing friends, men and women who have known the deceased for many years and who have gathered to pay their tribute of friendship From the home the funeral possession wended its way to the Danish Lutheran church in South Walnut where the final services were held and the remains were laid to rest in the quiet, peaceful, silent city of the dead. It was one of the most largely attended funerals every held in Graettinger, a tribute to the high esteem in which the deceased was held by those who have known him best. Beautiful and costly, floral decorations covered the casket at the home and at the church and were banked at the grave. The pallbearers who carried the earthly remains of John Nelson to their final resting place were C. H. Berdin, John Bondhus, Chris Jacobsen, S. P. Duhn, L. P. C. Larsen and Hans Duns. John Nelson was born in Denmark June 23, 1847. He came to America in 1866 and located at Racine Wisconsin where he remained for three years. In 1869, in company with Lars Christianson and L. P. Duhn, he came to the Palo Alto county and located on a homestead in the Fallow neighborhood. In 1881 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Brennan, who passed away the following year. In 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jensen. To this union eight children were born, seven of whom are living. They are Andrew, Alfred, Mrs. Frank (Johannah) Barrett, Nels, John, who was killed in action in France, Mrs. Christine Herselff, William and Martha. Mrs. Nelson passed away in 1911. In 1913 Mr. Nelson was united in marriage to Mrs. Kirsten ((Larson) Thomsen of this place. Besides his wife and children the deceased is survived by two sisters, Mr. Soren (Hannah) Christian Petersen of Nebraska and Mrs. William Fuller of Oregon. Mr. Nelson was a resident of this community for fifty-five years and was actively engaged in farming practically all of the time. In 1919 Mr. and Mrs. Nelson moved to Graettinger and located in their fine home on West Main St. Their cozy home was equipped with every comfort and convenience and they genuinely enjoyed their rest from the arduous duties in which they had been engaged for so many years, a rest they so richly deserved. No more fitting tribute could be paid to the worth of the deceased and the estimation in which he was held by his fellow man then the large attendance at his funeral. The sorrow in the hearts of the men and women who were present at the last sad rites expressed a sentiment that could not be placed in words. John Nelson was one of the finest men that our community has ever had. He not only made use of his ample means he entered whole heartedly in every worthily movement for the up building for his adopted country. He was a scrupulously honest, a man whose word could always be depended upon. He was a true friend and sincere friend, charitable in his judgement and fair to his fellow man. He was pleasant, agreeable and always had a kind word of encouragement for everyone. The Nelson home was noted for its hospitality in this community for the past half century and his pleasant whole hearted manner made the stranger feel that the welcome was genuine. In his home life the deceased was thoughtful, considerate husband and a kind and indulgent father. He always took a keen interest in the welfare and happiness of his upright sons and daughters who have so creditably taken their places in the various walks of life. They will miss their dear old father sadly but his memory will always guide them toward the higher and better things in life. To those who mourn the Times extends heartfelt sympathy.
