Description	:	July 18, 1912 - This community was shocked when word was sent, to county coroner Kessler that John Neppl of Roselle township had been killed while working in a hay field. Sheriff Hamilton and Coroner Kessler immediately left for the scene of the accident and held an inquest. Joe Dunck, Andy Kirsch and John Bauncher, Jr., were empanelled and served as a Jury. Sheriff Hamilton and Coroner Kessler immediately left for the scene of the accident and held an inquest. Joe Dunck, Andy Kirsch and John Bauncher, Jr., were empanelled and served as a Jury. The evidence of surroundings at the place of the accident as well aa that giv«n by members of the family and neighbors indicated that Mr Neppl had gone to he field shortly after one o'clock driving a team hitched to a hay rake. It seems that the axle of the rake broke and precipitated him under the teeth and the team became frightened and ran. Several rods from where the wheel broke was found his shoe and scattered along for several rods, further were pieces of the rake tongue. The team had dragged him into the corn field a short distance before he became untangled from the lines. The horses had stopped several rods further and were quietly feeding on the corn. His son Otto was the first to discover that something was wrong. When he saw the team in the corn, he hurried to the place but Mr Neppl was quite dead when found. His skull was fractured & death was probably instantaneous. His limbs were quite badly bruised and his face somewhat scratched up. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death due the breaking of the hay rake. John Neppl was born in Unterid, district of Veichtach, Bavaria, November 2, 1845 being 66 years, 8 months, 11 days of age at the time of his death. In 1870-1871 he served in the Franco-Prussian war where he served his country gloriously. On April 14, 1874, he landed in Roselle township, Carroll county. There He resided until the last. On April 9, 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Walburgia Geiger at Mt. Carmel. To this union were born seven children as follows: Mrs. Mary Loxtermkamp of Templeton; Rev. John J. Neppel of Mallard, Iowa; Miss Emma Neppel at home; Rev. Edward J. Neppel of Pomeroy; Otto Neppel at home; Mrs. Otillia Hoffmann of Crofton, Nebraska; Joseph M. Neppel, (Theological student) now at home. All of the children were home and attended the last sad services Tuesday. Surviving brothers and sisters are Mrs. Katherlne Kirsch of this county, Frank and Joseph of California, Andrew of Mt. Carmel, Miss Mary of St. Anthony's hospital and Rev. Alois Neppel of St. Louis, Missouri. Funeral services were held at Holy Angel church at Roselle Tuesday forenoon at 9 o'clock. Solemn Requiem mass was said by Father Gehling assisted by Rev. Edward Neppel, deacon, and Rev. John Neppel, sub-deacon, sons of the deceased, Rev. Alois Neppel, a son (theological student) censer bearer and assistants in the sanctuary were Father Baumler of Halbur, Father Schleyer of Breda, Father McCarthy of Carroll, Father Wessting of Carroll and Father Warzawa of Breda. Deceased was a good Christian, a consistent and devout member of the Catholic church, a good neighbor and kind friend. In the years that he had lived in this county he had endeared himself to all who knew him. He was a hard worker, honest and obliging and his death is a hard blow to the community. His demise is deeply and sincerely mourned by all. May he rest in peace.
