He had been down town on the day he was taken sick and his death was a great surprise and a sad blow. The trouble was gall stones, from which he suffered much in the last few days and which brought death very suddenly. John Dawson was born in Madison County, Ohio, Dec. 4, 1820. He was a son of James R. and Mary Ogdon Dawson. His father's people were from Wales. His ancestors on his mother's side were Irish and English. There flowed in his veins the blood of races who have greatly enriched our country's history. His grandfather was killed by Indians while going from Virginia to Kentucky. Mr. Dawson's father was born in Bourbon County, KY. He served in the was of 1812, for which the stepmother of the deceased drew a pension until her death. Sept. 26, 1832 his father settled in Money Creek township, along the timber of the Mackinaw. Mr. Dawson was at that time a lad of 12 years. The trip from Ohio was made with ox teams and took 21 days. Excepting a period of four years spent in California he has lived in this community even since. In the spring of 1875 he went to California for his health and since that time he has not been actively engaged in business. When the family settled on the old home place across the river this country had not been surveyed by the government. The Indians had just been driven out and there were but about a dozen log cabins along the timber up to the head of Mackinaw. The subject and his brother Croghan came over on this side and began cultivating the land where Mr. Kemp now lives. At that time the neighbors thought they were a long way from civilization. It is a little difficult for the most of us to realize that at that time there was no sign of a town where Lexington now stands. He and his father ran a furrow with an ox team and a plow from this place to Bloomington so the people could follow the road which had been laid out to that place. John Dawson was one of a large family. Three brothers and one sister are dead. They were Albert, Lafayette, Philander, and Mrs. Margaret Wroe. The following are still living: George and Croghan of this city, Samuel of Chicago, Mrs. Cynthia Kemp, Lexington,Neb., Washington and James of Iowa, and Mary Underwood, Kansas City, Mo. On Feb, 25, 1845, Mr. Dawson was married to Armintia Adams. To them were born eight children-- four boys and four girls. All are dead except Thomas A. and Orlando F. of this city. His first wife died April 9, 1861, and he was a second time married Dec. 3, 1861, to Almarine Hays who survives him. Mr. Dawson became interested in religious subjects at the age of 21, often exhorting in meeting. For a great many years he had been a member of the Christian church. A few years ago he told his minister that he wanted to do whatever the Bible taught. Before he became unconscious he asked that prayer be offered and was interested in his boys until the last. His heart was tender as that of a child. He loved the children and they loved him. Back of his blunt and rugged ways there was a heart which could be touched. He was generous and accommodating to his friends. His death removes one more of the links which bind us to the pioneer days which have such a meaning to us. We cannot show too great appreciation of the men and women who laid the foundations of our present civilization. They were a sturdy people. Their had experiences developed in them traits of character which are worthy of all praise. We have entered into their labors and should be worthy sons of such sires. There is something grand about death. When one has finished his work and the great majority of his friends have gone hence, it is a mercy that he can find release. Gradually the powers of life failed and from his own home, with his family and friends about him, without a struggle and seemingly without a pain, the deceased closed his long career and went into the presence of God, who will reward him in accordance with is wishes and deeds. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon from the Chistian church and was largely attended. Rev. W. H. Cannon conducted the services and made a nice talk.
