Read More	OBITUARY JOHN PARR HOWELLS JOURNAL JULY 1915 The silent messenger came, on Tuesday afternoon, June twenty-ninth, to John Parr, a well-known resident of this place and community. The cause of his death is assigned to general debility, having lived beyond the years of four score by almost eight. He was born in Germany on the fourteenth of August, 1827, and on the twenty-third of November, 1852, was married in his native land to Magdelena Lorenz. In 1855 they came to America with their first born, Adam, and located at St. Charles, Missouri. In 1868 they left there and came to this locality and established a home on a farm near St. Charles in Cuming county, and before the days of Howells, moved to the Olean neighborhood. Their life was like that of many of the pioneers and filled with the labor and care of rearing a family of children. Seven sons and one daughter were born to them, Adam, Jacob, Joseph, William, August, Bernard, Mary and Henry. Of these Joseph died on the seventh day of May, 1875, and Mary, who became the wife of Frank Cedja, passed to her long rest on the seventh day of May 1892. In 1893 Mr. and Mrs. Parr took up their residence in Howells to spend their latter days in comfort. On the first day of March, 1909, after ailing illness, the wife and mother was gathered home. On the ninth of November, 1910, he was married to Mrs. Mary Bogner, who survives him. The deceased was possessed of many admirable traits of character, and for his life was built on a foundation of honesty, justice to all and christian fortitude. His plain , unassuming manner and the sincerity and rectitude of his intentions ever held him in highest regard among his fellowmen. He is the last of the old veterans of the Civil War in this community to answer the "last taps", having served his country in the conflict as a member of a company from Missouri which saw much active service. He leaves a good name and a life record of many good deeds as a heritage to his survivng sons, Adam and August of the Olean neighborhood, Jacob of Omaha, and William, Bernard and Henry of Dodge. Besides these he leaves forty-two grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren. The funeral was held this morning and after a brief service at the family home, Rev. A. Brass officiated at requiem mass for the repose of the soul of the dead at SS Peter and Paul's church, where the deceased was a devout attendant for many years. Tribute was paid to his memory as a soldier and a citizen who lived a straightforward life for eithy-eight years and during all that time was honest and square in all his dealings. The funeral was largely attended and a large concourse of relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting place in SS Peter and Paul's cemetery. Peace to his ashes.
