He was adopted by Florence and Art Donlon and joined five sisters. He graduated from Central High School of Elkader in 1967. and through the following years attended Iowa State University in Fayette. During this time he spent 14 years as a dispatcher for the Clayton County Sheriff's Department. In July 1983 he married Jane (Andrae) Stoner and became step-father to her three girls, Jody, Heather and Jennifer. In August 1987, he enrolled at NITI's new electronics tech program. He graduated in May 1989 with an associate of arts degree in electronic technology. He was one of six to receive the Oustanding Student Award from the Class of 1989. He continued his membership at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elkader, but was also active in his family's church, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Volga. His hobbies included being a Ham Radio operator for the past 21 years, attaining the highest class license in 1989. He made, repaired, and modified much of his own radio equipment. He was a radio operator for MARS (The U.S. Army Military Affiliate Radio Systems) for 18 years, delivering messages to and from service personnel and their loved ones and preparing for communication relay in time of local, state, national, and international emergencies. He was also active in the Opera House Players; Society for Creative Anachronism; Commodore 64 Computer club; Swinging Squares Dance Club and 4-H. He worked with rabbits and poultry at the Clayton County Fair and took his father's place as superintendent of the rabbits and poultry each year at this fair. John Patrick Donlon died in an automobile accident Thursday, Nov. 2, 1989, on his way to an interview for an electronics technician position in McGregor. Survivors include his wife Jane and three step-daughters, Heather, Jody and Jennifer Stoner of Volga; his mother Florence Donlon of Elkader; five sisters, Mary Williams of Minneapolis, Minn., Patricia Milbrandt of Colorado Springs, Colo., Babette Johnson of Aitkin, Minn., Arlene Moran of Rushford, Minn., and Jane Schmitz of Arkadelphia, Ark., along with several nieces and nephews.
