John Payson Drake, for 23 years a member of the Teachers College faculty and head of the physics department of the school, died this morning at 3:30 o'clock at his home, 1118 Rural, of heart disease. Mr. Drake had been in poor health since summer and he had not taught school this fall. Mr. Drake's condition was said to have improved and he visited at the Teachers College Monday. Mr. Drake took sick Labor day with acute indigestion and had nearly recovered from the sickness when he took sick with pneumonia, which caused a weakened condition of his heart. The eventual cause of death was heart disease. He had practically recovered from pneumonia and had planned to return to school next week. Funeral arrangements have not been completed, pending the arrival of two sons, Russell Drake, of Albany, N.J. [N.Y.], and Richard Drake, of Chicago, Ill. John P. Drake was born May 26, 1866, in Pittsfield, N.H. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Thayer Drake. He was married to Hattie Pearl Drake on June 23, 1899, in Stevens Point, Wis. He came to Emporia in August 1914, where he became a member of the Teachers College faculty. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church. He also was a member of the Masonic lodge. Mr. Drake is survived by his widow; three sons, Russell Payson Drake, of Albany, N.Y.; Herbert Thayer Drake, of Kingman; and Richard Frances Drake of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Dr. A.K. Drake,of Prairie City, Ill., and two grandchildren, Barbara Ann Drake and Elizabeth Frances Drake, both of Albany, N.Y.
