Description	:	Johnny Yarr, 93, died in Point Townsend on January 30, 2008. The second of eight children, John Peter Yarr was born to Tom and Helena Yarr, June 1, 1914, in Chimacum. He grew up on the family dairy farm in the Tarboo Valley, where he attended the one-room schoolhouse taught by his cousins, the Yarr Girls, and his aunt, Margaret Tripp. After excelling in wrestling and football, Johnny graduated from Chimacum High School in 1933, and attended Gonzaga University on a football scholarship. He met Rosemary Kane in Roslyn, Washington. They married in 1940 and had two daughters, Kathleen and Molly Colleen. In addition to running the family farm, Johnny worked in construction and logging in both Washington and Alaska. He worked in Thorne Bay, Alaska, when it was the world's largest logging camp. A devout Democrat, Johnny was appointed postmaster of Quilcene by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966. He retired from the post office in 1980. Johnny was predeceased by his wife, Rosemary; his second wife, Clarice; daughter, Molly; and grandson, Jordan. He is survived by his best friend and companion of 14 years, Eloise Richards; daughter, Kathleen and husband Axel Svenson; grandsons, Ian Christiansen, Axel and Leif Svenson, and Mark and Scott Clark; granddaughter, Rosemary Svenson; brothers, Dan, Oscar and Bob Yarr; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Johnny was loved in both Jefferson County and Alaska. He always had an encouraging word and a joke. He helped people however he could. Johnny loved animals and nature. He liked the changing of the seasons and to watch the Alaska temperatures in the paper. He enjoyed birdwatching, smoking, a drink, and read widely on many subjects. Johnny was a Life Member of Elks. The funeral will be at St. Mary's Star of the Sea at noon on Monday, Feb. 4, followed by a potluck reception at the American Legion Hall in Port Townsend. (From the Peninsula Daily News)
