Description	:	Daniel Joseph Yarr was born to Thomas R. and Helena Anderson Yarr, in Dabob, Washington, on August 30, 1917. Dan was the fourth child of eight children (six boys and two girls). He attended Dabob School from the first grade to the eighth, moving on to Chimacum High School, where he graduated in 1936. He was very athletic and excelled in basketball and football. Read More	Daniel Joseph Yarr was born to Thomas R. and Helena Anderson Yarr, in Dabob, Washington, on August 30, 1917. Dan was the fourth child of eight children (six boys and two girls). He attended Dabob School from the first grade to the eighth, moving on to Chimacum High School, where he graduated in 1936. He was very athletic and excelled in basketball and football. It was his football skills that earned him a scholarship to the University of Washington. Danny's years as a Husky football player who hailed from a little community called Chimacum gave him many fond memories. He was one of the smallest players on the team, yet he won the distinct honor of being chosen as the recipient of the Guy Flaherty Most Inspirational Medal, presented to him at the Husky Grid Banquet in 1939. In 1941, the Army drafted Danny. His overseas tours took him to Normandy in northern France and Rhineland in Central Europe. He was discharged in 1945 with numerous awards and recognitions. Upon completion of the Army, Danny returned to his home state of Washington, working for about nine months clearing the right of way on the Bonneville power line. After that, he moved even closer to home, where he worked on decommissioned ships. From there, Dan worked mostly civil service jobs, including Fort Worden from 1949 to 1952, temporary postmaster in Port Townsend from 1952 to 1953 and Bangor from 1953 to 1955. From 1955 to 1976, Dan was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a wheat inspector, working the Western United States, and it was during those years that he purchased the family farm in Dabob. He retired in 1976. After retirement, the clear waters of Oak Bay and the pastures of Dabob lured Danny back home. He returned to Jefferson County and purchased his parents' home in Oak Bay from his brothers and sister. He lived in Oak Bay but spent many, many hours at the farm working his new business of raising beef cattle. He dearly loved walking those fields, feeding and caring for his cows and maintaining the property. He sold his stock in the early '80s yet visited the farm regularly. Even in his 90s, Danny still enjoyed a good game of golf, going out to breakfast and dinner, and talking politics, current affairs and the stock market. He was a life member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and held the title of the longest life member of the Port Townsend Elks. He was a faithful contributor to numerous charities. Danny is survived by two brothers, Oscar, who resides in Oregon, and Robert, who still lives on a portion of the original land in Oak Bay that was acquired by their grandfather, Peter Anderson, in the 1800s. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Tom and Helena Yarr; sister Grace Yarr McMillen; brothers John Yarr, James Yarr and Alan Yarr; and sister Margaret Yarr Mosley. A Catholic Mass and funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 14, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1335 Blaine Street, Port Townsend, WA 98368, at noon. A celebration of life will follow at the Port Townsend Elks, 555 Otto Street. Remembrances may be made to St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church; American Legion Post 29, 209 Monroe Street, Port Townsend, WA 98368; or the Port Townsend Elks Major Maintenance Fund.
