Word of his death was received by his grief stricken parents shortly after midnight Monday morning. The following telegram which arrived Tuesday afternoon, relates the entire story: "John P. Nockels, substitute pilot for the National Parks Scenic Airways company of Billings, Mont., and Robert Moore, 22, of Wolf Point, Mont., student pilot, were killed east of the Miles City airport Sunday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock when the monocoupe of the Billings concern, piloted by Nockels, in which the two were flying went into a nose dive at an altitude estimated at 600 feet and crashed to death. This fatal accident happened at the expiration of the two days celebration and dedication of the local field. Nockels was said to have arrived in Billings three weeks ago from St. Louis to pilot a new American Eagle plane, delivered by the Partington Airways concern there for Nels Naybell of Cody, Wyo. Nockels took part in the dedication exercises with the Billings monocoupe Sunday afternoon and won first place in stunt flying. Moore was attracted to the little ship and at the end of the exercises Nockels agreed to take him up. It is the theory among visiting and local pilots that Nockels desired to give Moore the controls for the moment and in changing seats the motor stalled. Eye witnesses say they noticed a sudden drop and an attempt to right the machine, then it plunged down. Moore's body was taken to Wolfe Point Monday for burial. Funeral services were held at Miles City Monday evening at the Milwaukee depot under the auspices of the Custer post, American Legion, for Nockels whose body was sent on to Carroll. His body arrived in Carroll Wednesday morning at 9:10 o'clock. John was born in Carroll June 4, 1905, and with the exception of but a few years spent his entire life in Carroll. Following his high school education he attended the St. Thoma school at St. Paul. This was followed by serving his country at San Francisco, where he joined the American Transport company and continued in service until he was honorably discharged because of an injury to his foot. Having a great desire to become an aviator, he entered the Van Hoffman Air Craft school at St. Louis in October, 1927. He completed the course in December and received his commercial pilot license in May 1928. He frequently made air trips to Carroll and had much to do with the present plans of establishing an airport in this city. John was fearless in the air and was a good aviator. His parents were naturally more or less anxious about his perilous occupation, but he often assured them he would never be hurt unless the engine stalled at a distance of 400 or 500 feet from the ground, and he considered that unlikely. John was full of plans for the future and his sudden death comes as a decided blow to his parents, who took just pride in seeing their first born make progress and bring honor to himself in the aviation world. Besides the parents, he is survived by three brothers, Frank Jr, Paul and Carl, and by two sisters Ruth and Helen. Funeral services will be held at the St. Lawrence church Thursday morning at 8:30 o'clock. The pall bearers will be his former school mates, Nick Beiter, George Holland, Edwin Wegman, Baldwin Arts, Geo Walden and Henry Pfelster. Maurice Dunn post, America Legion, will have charge of the military funeral. The entire city grieves with Mr and Mrs. Noclels in the death of their son.
