CALLED BY DEATH Closely following a paralytic stroke Phillip Doerr, Sr. was called by death at the family home in Winnetoon last Sunday evening at 8:30. Mr. Doerr was one of those staunch and agressive pioneers who helped to build this prairie country into an empire of fine and improved farms. During his life time he applied himself to farming and being thrifty that his later years might be those of comfort. Accordingly, he retired from the farm ten years ago and resided in California until last year when he purchased a home in Winnetoon where he resided at the time of death. He was typical of the many early pioneers who devoted a life time of energy to acquire a sufficency for themselves and in turn be of help later to their big families. Phillip Doerr was a man who commanded respect because he dealt fairly with his fellowmen and who merited justly those commendable qualities of ambitiousness, honesty and respectfulness. The deceased, Johannes Phillip Doerr, was born at Frankonian Krumbach, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, on August 24, 1855. In 1882 he emigated to America. after a brief sojourn in Pekin, Ill., he pushed westward to Central City, Nebraska, where on August 11, 1884, he entered into wedlock with Elizabseth Cornelius of Peoria, Ill. The marriage was blessed with a family of one daughter and six sons. One son did not survive infancy. In the spring of 1896 the deceased again changed his dwelling place, moving to a farm eight miles east of Creighton and joining the pioneers in building up the county. He devoted himself to the occupation of farming until he retired in 1916. The years of his retirement he spent in sunny California and in a trip to his native land, until advancing age prompted him to seek a closer contact with his children in 1929. The couple lived at their home in Winnetoon these last two years. The health of the deceased showed signs of declining during the last three years and failed more rapidly during the last two months. He died at his home in Winnetoon after two weeks of bedfastness, on Sunday evening, May 3. Those who are made sad by his death are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Henry Reiners; 5 sons, Phillip, Peter, Leonard, Fred and George; 18 grandchildren; and two brothers, Leonard and George all near Creighton; also one brother and one sister-in-law in Germany, the land of his birth. He was a life long Lutheran and during his last illness called for his pastor and the holy sacrament of the altar. His earthly pilgrimage, so replete with shifts, he brought to 75 years, 8 months and 9 days. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church at 1:30, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Obermeyer. A large number of relatives and friends were in attendance at the last rites. The floral tributes on the bier bore evidence of the esteem and respect he was held in by his every acquaintance. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery. To those who mourn the departed husband, father and brother, we extend our most profound sympathy.
