Read More	John Preston Moore, of Lexington, died Saturday, February 4, 1995, in Charlottesville. Born of a Rockbridge family in Lexington, November 1, 1906, he was the son of a prominent Lexington lawyer, Frank Moore, and Lois Thorn Moore of Millersburg, Ky. He was married to Anna C. Dart of Providence, R.I. A graduate of Washington & Lee University, summa cum laude, he took a Masters Degree in history at Harvard University and a Ph.D. at Northwestern University. He taught at Washington & Lee, The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. and for 26 years at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, La. As a historian, he was the author of four books on Spanish Colonial History, one of which, REVOLT IN LOUISIANA, won the Kemper Williams Prize in Louisiana history. He contributed numerous articles and book reviews to historical magazines and journals, and in addition, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship to Spain. In the Second World War he served at the Hdg. of the 12th Fleet Naval Command in London in Naval Intelligence, retiring in 1945 as Lt. Commander USNR. Returning to his home in Lexington in 1972, he became the historian of the Rockbridge Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. A member of the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church of Lexington, he is survived by his wife of fifty two years; a son, Frank Laird Moore; four grand-children of Baton Rouge; a daughter, Sara Ann C. Lincoln; and another son, Ralph Merrill Lincoln; two nephews, Hullihen Williams Moore of Richmond, Thomas Thorn Moore of Charlotte, N.C. Graveside services at the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery in Lexington will be conducted by his cousin, The Rev. John Moore, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 8. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the John Preston Moore History Scholarship at Washington & Lee University. Friends may contact the family at the residence, 17 Jordan Street.
