Received 2021-09-28 from #50991970: ONE CRITICALLY INJURED Head-on Collision Claims Two Lives Two elderly Baynes Lake residents were believed to have been killed instantly last Saturday afternoon when their car was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle on the Wardner road about a mile past the Wardner-Fort Steele junction. Dead are Ray Monesmith, aged 73, and his wife Lillian Maude Monesmith, aged 65. In St. Eugene Hospital in critical condition from injuries is G. Harold Holm, of Canal Flats, driver of the second vehicle. A third car involved, driven by John A. Koski, of Wardner, and carrying his wife, three children, and father-in-law, scraped along side, and was damaged to the extent of $500. The occupants escaped injury. Police said the Monesmith and Koski vehicles were traveling from Cranbrook towards Wardner with the Koski vehicle in front. The Holm's car was traveling towards Cranbrook and as the Monesmith car turned out to pass the car ahead it collided with the oncoming vehicle. The two cars that collided head-on, a 1954 Chrysler and a 1956 Ford, are reported by police to be totally wrecked. At a preliminary inquest held here Monday under Coroner Dr. W. O. Green, the inquest was adjourned "sine die." Joint Service Held Wednesday A joint funeral service for the victims of the accident was held from Cranbrook United Church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. Bryan Colwell officiated. Mrs. Monesmith was born at Portland, Oregon, October 20th, 1894, and came to Canada 47 years ago. She had lived in British Columbia for 30 years. For some time she lived in the Moyte and Nelson districts and for the past four years had been a school teacher at Elko. She is survived by a stepson, Raymond Monesmith, Cranbrook; one daughter, Mrs. R. M. Lekivetz, Victoria; one brother, Frank Bunting, U.S.N.; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Mills, Portland, and seven grand-children. Mr. Monesmith was born at Fulton County, Indiana, October 18th 1886, and came to this province to the Baynes Lake country 21 years ago. He operated a ranch and for some time worked with the B. C. Forest Service as a lookout man. He is survived by a son, Raymond, Cranbrook; a stepdaughter, Mrs. R. M. Lekivetz, Victoria; one brother, Gus Monesmith, Wenatchee, Wash.; one sister, Mrs. Hazel Galt, California. The Cranbrook Daily Townsman - December 18, 1959 Johnny Monesmith was also married to Lavina Jane "Vina" Barger on December 8, 1916 in Wenatchee, Washington shortly after the divorce from Ida M. Kyes. They together had one known daughter, Ramona Blanche Monesmith who died at about 5 years of age in 1923.
