The burial was in the Geneva cemetery. Mr. Riel was born in Kiel, Germany, and grew up in Gergenhusen, near Kiel. At the age of 17, he immigrated to the United States and settled in the state of Nebraska. During his active years he lived on four different farms in the Geneva-Grafton area. April 6, 1904, Mr. Riel married Anna Tobiassen. Mr. and Mrs. Riel were granted a long and blessed life together, celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 1954. Their marriage was blessed with six children, two of whom died in infancy and a third, John Bernard at the age of 19. When Grace Lutheran church was organized at Geneva in 1927, Mr. Riel became a charter member. At Thanksgiving time 10 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Riel moved into town, where they have lived since. Mr. Riel died peacefully in his sleep early on the morning of November 21, 1955, having reached the age of 81 years, 8 months and 1 day. He is survived by his wife; by a son Arthur of Grafton; by two daughters, Helen of Geneva and Doris (Mrs. Rex Philippi) of Bruning; and by three grandchildren. Two brothers, Carl and Ferdinand, and a sister, Emma are still living in Germany. Pallbearers at the funeral were Raymond Gough, Vernon Lauenstein, Arthur Schaldecker, Carl Schaldecker and Jakie Schaldecker. A quartet consisting of Mrs. William Bauer Jr., Mrs. Warren Oates, Miss Laverna Everts and Miss Anna Louise Hinrich sang “Just as I Am” and “I’m But a Stranger Here.” Pastor Paul E. Eickmann officiated at the funeral and committal services. “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” –1st Corinthians 15:57.
