John Robert Weinand, 92 years of age, of rural Alma, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege, Nebraska. John was born February 17, 1925, at the Kerr Hospital in Alma, the youngest son of Aloysius M. and Susan I. (Ankeny) Weinand. He received his education at Alma Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1942. John engaged in farming with his parents until his marriage. On November 18, 1950, John was united in marriage to Lucile A. Lennemann. Within a few months of their wedding, John was called in the armed service and served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Returning to the family farm north of Alma after his service, they raised three children: Ray, Mary and Mark. There, they made their home together, for the 67 years of their married lives. John was an innovative and visionary farmer. He was skilled at designing and building solutions to everyday farming challenges. He could fix anything. John was an avid reader, especially farming materials. He researched the feasibility, then introduced soybeans as a viable crop in Harlan County, Nebraska. John and Lucile were recognized and honored with a Nebraska Pioneer and Heritage Farm Award, for continuous farm ownership for at least 100 years, in 2010. John officially retired from farming in 2007 at the age of 82. John was extremely proud of his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and during the final weeks of his life, he would brag endlessly about them, to anyone that would listen. John was a long-time member of the Catholic Church. During his spare time, John enjoyed a sequence of varied passions during his life including: photography, gunsmithing, bowling, fishing, boating, hunting, golfing, and dancing. Besides his parents; John was preceded in death by his two brothers: Francis and Gilbert; and two sisters and their husbands: Gladys and Edward Wolf and Ruth and Arley Bryant. John leaves to celebrate his life; his loving wife, Lucile Weinand of rural Alma; two sons: Ray Weinand and his wife, Fredlyn of Columbus, Nebraska and Mark Weinand of Kearney, Nebraska; one daughter: Mary Goessling and her husband, Larry of Alma; five grandchildren: Tyler Weinand and his wife, Kristin of Omaha, Nebraska, Jay Weinand and his girlfriend, Michelle Kline of Columbus, Anne Hatch and her husband, Chris of Lincoln, Nebraska, Laura Goessling of Alma and Nicole Sinsel of Lincoln; two great-grandchildren: Emmett and Claire Hatch of Lincoln; special nephews and nieces: Dudley Wolf of Ansley, Nebraska, Margorie and Lloyd Trew of Kearney, Nebraska, Richard and Patti Wolf of Danville, Indiana, David Bryant of Yachats, Oregon, Rita Bryant of Longview, Washington and Joe and Jan Bryant of Vancouver, Washington; along with other relatives and friends. Visitation was held on Thursday, November 30, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Alma with the Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. A memorial has been established in John's honor and will be designated at a later date.
