Contributor: Nancy Meenen Moser (48966421) • [email protected] John Rundle, Sr. was born in Devonshire, England, on February 16, 1847, and in the fall of 1870 came to America with his brother Henry to join their brother William, who came to this country the preceding year, and landing in New York City, going direct from there to Manhattan, Kan. Their total earthly possessions were $2 and this amount was spent for shelter from a Kansas blizzard. The next day they walked to the homestead of their brother William who lived near Clay Center, arriving there tired, hungry and penniless. He later took a homestead on the land he made his home continuously until his death November 25, 1925, aged seventy-eight years, nine months and nine days. In his early life he united with the Wesleyan Methodist church of England and after coming to America continued his religious worship with the Methodist Episcopal church. During the pioneer days there were no preachers and very few churches, and the services were held in homes and school houses and he was frequently called upon to take the place of the minister. Many were the tribulations and hard were the trials in his early days, but he never became downhearted or discouraged, always looking on the bright side and ever pressing onward and upward. He was united in marriage, June 20, 1872 to Ann Lapthorn Thornton, taking up his abode on the homestead in Hayes township. She preceded him in death eight years, five months and twenty-three days. To this union were born eight children, four boys and four girls; four preceding them to the better land beyond; one boy and one girl dying in infancy and Minnie Helen preceding them on July 11, 1909, aged twenty-five years and Annie Elizabeth on July 16, 1920, aged forty-six years. He leaves to mourn his loss four children, John Samuel, William Henry and Thomas Herbert, all of the community, and Helena Maude Faivre of Wakefield, Kans. He also leaves eleven grandchildren, all of this county, and two brothers and two sisters; William S. of this community and Samuel of Portsmouth, Hamlin, England, Mrs. Sarah Stewart of Clifton, Kans., and Mrs. Ellen Sager of Edmond, Kan. He was one of the charter members in the organization of the Hayes Methodist church, taking an active part in its program, both spiritually and financially, having served time in all the offices of the church and Sunday school and being a member of the board of trustees at the time of his death. He has always been a devoted man to this family and dearly loved his home, never letting birthdays or Christmas pass without remembrance from father and grandpa, and his expressions proved the scripture, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Though starting out with nothing, his earnest desire in life was to see his family comfortably provided for in the future, and he lived to see his desire satisfied. Besides his immediate relatives, he leaves a host of friends, and was loved and honored by all who knew him. His faith in God was his refuge in times of trouble and his earnest teachings of the Bible in his own home gave him great joy in the thought of meeting as an unbroken family in the better land beyond, where parting is no more. The funeral was held Friday afternoon, service first at the residence in Hayes and later at the Hayes M.E. church. It was a beautiful service and , though many of his friends did not learn of his death in time to attend, there still was a great gathering. The interment was at Greenwood cemetery.
