He passed away at the Berwster Hospital under the watchful eye of several of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. He passed away at the Berwster Hospital under the watchful eye of several of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. Johns was born in York, Nebraska, November 19, 1897, the only son of Mary and Charles Gebbers. He came to Pateros, Washington with his parents and sisters via train and steamboat in 1906 John was joined in marriage to Martha Gamble at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on April 30, 1928. To that union was born one son, Dan Gebbers. Since the family was in the lumber, cattle and orchard business over the years, John spent hours in the saddle on his favorite horses riding every inch of the hills and range, not only checking out his cattle but inspecting the timber to be cut at the sawmill. His firs live was his cattle business. He ahd developed a first class herd, with good alternate grazing area, well developed water holes and good winter feed areas to the point that he was recognized as the Cattleman of the Year for the county of Okanogan in 1964, perhaps one of his product accomplishments. John, with Martha, kept the Gamble Lumber Co., producing box material, lumber and jobs until illness overtook Martha and the mill wound down and closed at the end of the era. John was preceded in death by his wife Martha in 1973, his parents and two sisters, Maude and Jessie. He is survived by a son Dan, 5 grandchildren, Danna Thompson, Jody Gebbers (Crane), Mac, Sonya and Cass Gebbers, 5 great-grandchildren, Melanie, Brian and Jason Thompson, and Johnny and Danny Gebbers, all of Brewster. From the birth of his first grandchild John's main purpose in life, no matter how busy he may have been, was the raising of his grandchildren. (He spent hours with them on horseback, pitching balls to them, just passing time with them and teaching them the many things he himself had learned in he early years and felt it important that these traditions be preserved.) It was no wonder that those same grandchildren surrounded his bed day and night during the last days of his life. Other survivors include Pearl Underwood, a sister, and several nieces and nephews, including Alice Grover of Brewster. Funeral services were held Friday, June 4, 10 am from the Brewster Cemetery with Reverend Ray Glessner officiating. Interment in the Brewster Cemetery. Arrangements by Barnes Chapel, Brewster.
