Thomas Ward of Wm. and Anna Coulbourn. (MD Death Certificate) John S. Ward married Elizabeth Jani Holland, daughter of William J. Holland and Ellen Eleanor Russell, on 24 Mar 1858. They were the parents of Ella Ward (1859-17 Apr 1867) and Mary Elizabeth Ward Gillette (27 Dec 1860-22 Jul 1940). John S. Ward registered for the draft during the Civil War. He was shown as John S. Ward, 36-year-old farmer from Maryland, a resident of the Lawsons District, Somerset County, MD who registered in the First Congressional District, Somerset and Worcester Counties, MD on July and August, 1863. John S. Ward, 50w, married Virginia 'Jenny' Blades, 25w, on 3 May 1883 at Somerset County, MD. Virginia was the widow of Luther Ross Blades (m. 30 Dec 1862), and the daughter of Elijah 'Owl' Sterling and Mary T. Lawson. Virginia was born at "Makepeace," Somerset County, Md., 3 Mar 1843. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Richard L. Heward, Snow Hill, Md., 11 Sep 1929. Interment was in Whatcoat Cemetery, Snow Hill. Her gravestone shows her as Virginia Sterling Ward, wife of John S. Ward. John was interred at St. Peters Cemetery alongside his first wife and infant child. His grave is unmarked.
