His eyes were "sky-blue", the same as Grandpa Thomas Shandy's eyes. === DEATH TAKES JOHN SHANDY John Shandy, a pioneer farmer of the community southeast of Wakefield, passed quietly away at noon Sunday, Sept. 13th at his home following; a brief illness, caused chiefly from hardening of the arteries, from which he had suffered some for the past three years, following a paralytic stroke. It is hard to realize that this beloved character has passed on, and that no more will his pleasant greetings, and lively banter on most any subject be heard by his friends, neighbors and relatives. But such is the way of life, though it does seem too bad that such a fine citizen should be called. The funeral services were held at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Shandy home, then at 2:30 at the Methodist church here, with Rev. F. V. Tannehill, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Highland cemetery here, with the local Masons, of which he was a member, in charge at the grave. The wealth of floral tributes and the crowd of sorrowing friends, neighbors and relatives offered mute testimony of the love and esteem in which he was held by all. John Sidney Shandy, son of John Jacob Shandy and Sarah Payne Shandy, was born at Rockport, Atchison County, Missouri on March 12, 1863, and came to this part of Kansas in 1877 with his mother, sisters and brothers. He lived on a farm southwest of Wakefield two years, and then moved to his home southeast of town, where he spent the .balance, of his life. He was married on Dec. 25, 1888 to Lydia Hostetler, to which union 11 children were born, 7 sons and 4 daughters, all of whom are still living in this community. They are Gladys Heintz and George and Carl Shandy of near Milford; Mrs. John (Ethel) Fasse of near Wakefield, John, Jr. of Alida, Mrs. Edith Oegerle of Junction City and Frank, Arthur, Clifford, Hazel and Earl at home. He is also survived by his widow, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Winsor of Wakefield and Mrs. Ellen Cole of Winters, Calif., besides nine grandchildren and other relatives. Mr. Shandy was a versatile man throughout his life. Though not highly educated, he read lots, thought deeply and could talk intelligently on any subject. His advice and counsel was .eagerly sought by all who knew him. Besides being a successful farmer, he schooled 'himself into becoming a fine blacksmith, lumber mill and threshing machine operator, and during the later years of his life, when he could no longer engage in active farming operations he picked up the art of rug making, and succeeded far beyond his expectations. He even made his own rug needles and other tools, and since Christmas had made several dozen very beautiful and artistic creations. During the drought of 1934 he rigged up quite an extensive irrigation system at his farm, and watered much of his corn land from the river, thereby getting about the only corn crop in this community, which he sold at a fine price for seed. He also enjoyed gardening and in fact, really loved farming and its kindred work. Perhaps few men got the satisfaction out of life that he did, even until the very last. His last illness was brief, painless, and spent in a chair, and he never seemed to lose consciousness.
