Description	:	John Sim "Jake" Edgar was born in Dalkeith, Scotland 7/12/1842. He came to the United States with his parents, William & Helen (Sim) Edgar when he was 8 years old. The family first lived on Staten Island and later in Janesville, WI where he spent his younger days, being educated in the public schools. During the Civil War he was engaged as a teamster in Missouri and Arkansas for nine months, but he had to return home to care for his mother and the farm. He came to the United States with his parents, William & Helen (Sim) Edgar when he was 8 years old. The family first lived on Staten Island and later in Janesville, WI where he spent his younger days, being educated in the public schools. During the Civil War he was engaged as a teamster in Missouri and Arkansas for nine months, but he had to return home to care for his mother and the farm. He was married to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Woolliscroft in September 1867. A year later, they moved to Mitchell County, IA as he was desirous of broadening his field of action. In Mitchell County he engaged in farming for 4 years. Then he moved to Worth County, IA and continued in agriculture until 1886 when he moved to Rock Falls, IA. There he established an elevator very successfully as well as building up an extensive coal business. John was also interested in quarrying. He resided in Rock Falls the remainder of his life (33 years). He died 5/7/1920 in a Mason City hospital of Bright's Disease. The Edgar's became the parents of nine children: Helen, Annie Elizabeth,Mary Louise,John,Jr., Jennie Beatrice, William David, Thomas Bentley, Ray Arthur, and Glen Woolliscroft.
