War records say February, but I like his German language birth and baptism record, which says he was born on 10 January 1825 and was baptized "Johannes" by Mr. Binninger (likely a lay minister), on 24 April 1825. War records say February, but I like his German language birth and baptism record, which says he was born on 10 January 1825 and was baptized "Johannes" by Mr. Binninger (likely a lay minister), on 24 April 1825. Witnesses to the baptism were Lohrens (Lawrence) Singli and his wife Chaterina (Catherine), who were probably the baby's maternal grandparetns. OK, we've got a good start. But then comes the "Great Gap," those years between birth and marriage that is so often void of information about the lives of our ancestors. We wonder how they grew up, whether they were loved or favored by friends and family and whether fears or illness afflicted them. But who knows? So we skip almost 22 years to 12 October 1847, where, in a different locale (Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania), John Singley Henninger married Esther Malech. Samuel Sidders officiated. Wonder who he was? Friend? Travelling minister? But I digress... John S. and Esther had 11 children (listed below), 7 sons and 4 daughters. Did all those pregnancies drain Esther too greatly? Although she survived another 20 years after her last child was born, wife Esther preceeded John in death on 22 April 1892, leaving John S. Henninger a widower during his last 20 years on Earth--and likely when he needed her help! Pension records show that John S. Henninger served 9 months in the final year of the Civil War, enlisting 2 Sept. 1864 in "D" Company, 1st Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry. Did being in the cavalry mean that you had to bring your own horse? I've heard that, but don't know for sure. In any case, he was honorably discharged on 6 June 1865 at camp near Alexandria, Virginia. John S. was a gunsmith, so he followed in his father's footsteps. On rare occasions, a Henninger-made rifle or gun comes up at auction. About 15 years ago, we bid on a rifle but were outbid early as the final price rose to $10,800! I don't know whether that rifle was made by John Singley Henninger, his brother, George Washington Henninger, or by the boys' father, John Henninger. But it certainly was a heady few moments when we thought we might actually own a gun made by an ancestor as much as 200 years ago! And what did John Singley Henninger look like? His Civil War enlistment record says that he was 39 and 8 months of age at enlistment, 5'9" tall, fair of complexion with gray eyes and sandy hair. So far, so good; and how did he age? Medical exam at age 66 states that he had lost an inch-and-a-half, measuring in at 5'7-1/2" and weighing 150 lbs. The physician notes that John Singley suffered from rheumatic pain of the right hip, sciatica, nerve pain in the ligaments of his right knee, piles with inflamed and bleeding hemorrhoids, deafness in the left ear and feebleness of movement in old age more than expected for a male at his age. Aging was maybe not so good, but it was better than being 6' under in a pine box. And despite his physical condition, John S. lived another twenty years. I guess the Henningers have longevity genes--born to endure, no matter what! John Singley Henninger is purported to be buried in Jewell Cemetery, however I have yet to confirm that by documentation, so, more anon...
