His entire life has been with little exception spent in this community, which has been one of a quiet, unassuming christian life, worthy of our highest esteem and admiration. His entire life has been with little exception spent in this community, which has been one of a quiet, unassuming christian life, worthy of our highest esteem and admiration. Upon the 22nd day of December, 1870, he was united in marriage to Miss Sophronia Kid well, who remains to mourn his going. To this union were born seven children, of whom the eldest son, Walter Bell, preceded the father in death at the early age of 10 years. In his early life Bro. Barton united upon his profession of faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and baptism with the Baptist church, being one of the oldest members of this church. Bro. Barton's life and character stand out as a lasting monument in this community and throughout the region of the Bethel Baptist Association because of his undaunted faith in God and God's people on earth. Bro. Barton, as a christian of much prayer, was widely known and highly esteemed because of his affiliation with the Association. He served ten years as a member of the Executive Board and four years as Assistant Moderator of the Association, which office he filled faithfully and most conscientiously unto the day of his going. This immediate community will long remember his undivided stand in matters of morals and rights while he served as Judge of the County Court from the western district. These qualifications of character were sources of strength and consolation to him during the days of his sickness. He truly bore his affliction of ten weeks without a murmur, offering advices and consolations instead of requesting such. He expressed his readiness and desire to go and to be with his Lord in saying, "Yes, indeed, I am ready to go." Bro. Barton leaves to mourn his going, his wife, Mrs. J. S. Barton; six children Three daughters, Mrs. R. L. Carroll of Pawhuska, Okla.. Mrs. T. W. Noel of Lentner, Mo., Miss Eva Barton, at home; three sons, Rev. Geo. F. Barton of Blackfoot, Idaho, Rev. Edgar C. Barton of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Jesse W. Barton of the Oak Ridge community; one sister, Mrs. J. M. Brison of Long Beach, Calif.; four brothers, Squire P. Barton of Lentner, Mo., Stephen F. Barton of Clarence, Mo., Wm. W. Barton of Albany, Ga., and Morgan H. Barton of Lakenan, Mo. One brother, George W., and two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Clay and Mrs. U. U. Bowers, preceded Bro. Barton in death. He also leaves to mourn his going, eleven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. To these be added an unnumbered host of immediate relatives and friends. May our Heavenly Father's consolation, "Peace be with you," be the comfort and strength of all these in the hours of grief. Funeral services were held at Oak Ridge church at 11 a. m. Thursday, April 8, conducted by Rev. Geo. C. Jurrens of Hannibal, a close friend of the deceased. Burial was in the Oak Ridge cemetery near the old church he loved so well.
