Occupation: Farmer MO d/c 7973 Stephen Fee Barton Dead Stephen Fee Barton, son of Morgan P. and Elizabeth A. McBroom Barton, was born on the old Barton Homestead south of Lentner, Feb. 13, 1858. His father died in Alton, Ill., while a Confederate prisoner, of that much dreaded disease, smallpox, leaving his widow with nine children, the youngest, Morgan H., only six months of age. He took his place as best he could with the other boys, being like a father to the mother and baby brother. His brothers and sisters were Geo. W., John S., Sarrah G., Mary S., Nancy J., Squire P., William W. and Morgan H. "Uncle Fee" was converted under Rev. J. B. Culpepper during a tent revival in the fall of 1895. He united with the Bacon Chapel church and no matter where his home was he always claimed old Bacon Chapel as his church home. He was true to his maker, living every day of his life as best he could. On Oct. 28, 1891 he was married to Miss Susie E. Smith of near Enterprise, Mo., and to this union were born nine children, six boys and three girls. A little baby girl who came to bless this home was soon taken. Carrie White Barton Bennett died July 1, 1918, leaving two little girls, whom she gave to her mother and father while on her deathbed. Then on Feb. 8, 1928, they were called upon to give up a grown son, Shelby. On Nov. 13, 1930 they gave up another son, Fletcher. All these seemed to make "Uncle Fee" "see the lights of home" very strong. He spent his entire life of 81 years and four days in Shelby county in the vicinity of Lentner, Hagers Grove and Clarence where he passed out of this life on Friday morning, February 17, 1939, after having read the morning paper. He must have heard the Master's call, as he lay down on the couch and closed his eyes in death. He leaves his widow, four sons and one daughter namely, James L., of Moberly; Nelson B., of Clarence; Willie S., of Brookfield; Mrs. Arthur Graves of Cairo; and Thornton of Hagers Grove; two aged brothers, Squire P. of Lentner and William W., of Liberty; ten grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted at Bacon Chapel Sunday afternoon, February 19, at 2:00 o'clock, with the Rev. L. C. Maggart of Shelbina officiating. Burial was at Bacon Chapel.
