Dec 20, 1917 - Carroll Knight - Last Friday evening about 9:00 o'clock as Allen Hoyt was on his way home from attending a meeting of the Citizens Club he stopped at the North Star Ice cream parlor for refreshments, but was unable to gain access to the building. Peering through the windows he discovered the form of a man lying upon the floor, and immediately ran back to the club rooms and secured help. Accompanied by C.E. Reynolds, Ralph Maclean and Wm. Winnike, Mr. Hoyt returned to the building and the door was forced. Entering the place they found that John Stammeyer, an employe of the North Star, had been the victim of a paralytic stroke, and that he was in a serious condition, his entire right side being affected. The unfortunate man was taken to St. Anthony's hospital, where every comfort and convenience is being provided, but his condition does not seem to improve to any appreciable extent, and grave fears are entertained over his recovery. Later just as we go to press, we learn that Mr. Stammeyer passed away this morning at 7:00 o'clock, without ever having regained his power of speech. The Times extends sympathy to the bereaved family in their hour of affliction. Dec 27, 1917 - Carroll Times - John Stammeyer passed away at the hospital Thursday morning, December 20, as a result of the stroke of apoplexy which he sustained the week before. The funeral was held Saturday morning from the St. Lawrence church and he was laid to rest in S.S. Peter and Paul's cemetery. Mr. Stammeyer was a quiet unassuming man, who went about his dully work with a cheerful and happy spirit, although his health for several years past had not been good. His life centered about his church and his family. His children being deprived of their mother at an early age, it remained for him to be both father and mother to the small group. He was born in Kentucky, January 4, 1854, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Stammeyer. When 8 years old he moved with his parents to Dubuque and four years later came with his aunt, Mrs. Clara Drees, and a party of relatives and friends to Mt. Carmel, where a Catholic colony was formed. After reaching young manhood, he was married at S.S. Peter and Paul's church, this city to Miss Anna Schmidt, and he has since made this city his home. His wife passed away in 1902. He leaves to mourn his loss four children: Katherine (Mrs. C.J. Potter), John J., Margaret G., and William F. One daughter, Gertrude was killed on the railroad in 1904. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Pat Hammill and Miss Katherine Stammeyer.
