With this departing year has passed away another of the old settlers of this county. With this departing year has passed away another of the old settlers of this county. Mr. Stout moved from Richland County, Ohio, his native state, to Iowa in 1840 and soon after entered a section of land on which he resided up to the time of his death. In 1843 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Miller. Five sons and two daughters were born to them. One son and the companion of his life preceded him to the spirit world. The children and grandchildren who followed the remains of the aged pilgrim to their last resting place on earth, will, it is hoped, not only appreciate the legacy of houses and lands left to them, but will accept with a deeper sense of gratitude that noble and more enduring portion of an upright and peaceful life, an example of sterling integrity and moral rectitude set before them, both by precept and practice, during the lifetime of the departed. Mr. Stout was a man of few words, but of very kindly feelings. He attended strictly to his own affairs, always finding, as he told the writer once, enough to do, without meddling in other men's matters. Indeed few men had less to do with neighborhood dissensions and misunderstandings than the deceased. His counsels were always for peace and quiet. He would rather suffer wrong from others than wrong his fellow men. May we not, in view of his past life, say of him, "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God."
