Austin, well known and prominent citizen of Vesuvius, died at his home Saturday at 12:40 p.m. after a short illness of about ten days. Mr. Augstin was born March 26, 1861 in Louisa County, but spent most of his life in Augusta and Rockbridge Counties. At the age of twenty-three he came to Crimora, as superintendent of the manganse mines. This business he followed until a few years ago, and his judgement and advice was sought by various mining firms after he retired from active work. Mr. Austin was an active and beloved member of the Vesuvius Baptist church where he had served as Sunday school superintendent, teacher, deacon, leader of B.T.U., trustee and clerk of the church, the latter two offices being held at the time of his death. He was a regular delegate to the Augusta Baptist association as long as he was able to go. He was an enthusiastic and loyal member of I.O.O.F. Lodge, being a k charter member of Midway Lodge, which was instituted in 1896. He had filled all offices in that lodge and was Past Grand Master. His devotion to this order remained until his last days. On April 23, 1884 he married Miss Betty S. Ham, who survuved him. If him. If he had lived until April, they would have celebrated a 60th anniversay. The following sons also survive: H.D. and W.A. Austin of Vesuvius, Allen A. Austin of Washington, D.C. and one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Secrist of Vesuvius. Funeral services were from Vesuvius Baptist church Monday at 11:00 a.m. It was conducted by a former pastor, the Rev. D.N. McGrady of Roanoke, assisted by the present pastor, the Rev. William Kessinger. Interment was in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Active pallbearers were: W.F. Humphries, J.A. Ham, R.F. Ham, G.A. Cash, C.U. Bradley, C.C. Mohler, Lacy Fitzgerald, and John Snyder. Honorary: S.D. Mangus, Harry Campbell, Guy Mitchell, Willie Humphies, T.A. Graves, E.W. McGuffin, Delphin Ham, D.H. Humphries, Harold Humphries, T.A. Graves, Lyle Humphries, Melvin Humphries, Bob Groah, James Mohler, Kenneth Hays, Clyde Humphries, Hunter Earhart, John A. Ham Jr., Everett Cash, and Joe McGuffin.
