Alexander, Sioux City, Iowa, Western Publishing Company, 1882, p. 542: John Thoma, proprietor of billiard hall and restaurant, was born in Germany in 1851. His parents emigrated to the U.S. in 1855, locating in Clayton Co., Io., and subsequently in Postville. He followed farming till 1874, when he came to Postville and engaged in his present business. He married Anna Ruckdals [sic] in 1871; she was also born in Germany. They have four children, John, Anna, William and Fred. Mr. T. is a member of the A.F. & A.M., and A.O.U.W. John Thoma Sr. was born In Welssenstadt, Bavaria, Germany, April 24, 1851, and came with his parents to this country In the year 1855. The family first located in Clayton county and later moved to a farm In Grand Meadow township. On February 15, 1871, he was married to Miss Dorothea Ruckdaschel and this union was destined to endure for more than 63 years, and even in death they were not to be separated for long, as he followed his wife to the grave just three days after her demise. In the year 1874 he and his family moved to Postville, where he engaged in business and was so engaged until twelve years ago, when he retired from trade after turning his grocery and restaurant business over to two of his sons that he might have more time to devote to the care of his wife and help mate who was in failing health. Mr. Thoma was one of Postvllle's prominent business men and citizens over a long period of years and by his upright life and conduct and genial ways drew about him a wide circle of friends. During his active years he held positions of honor and trust in the civic life of his home city, having been both a member of the town council and the board of education, in both of which positions he won distinction by the fair and faithful manner in which he attended the duties involving upon him as a public servant. Fraternally he was a charter member of Noble Lodge No. 51, A. O. U. W., and was for many years its financier. He was also affiliated with Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204, A. F. & A. M. for more than fifty-five years, having a few years ago been presented a gold pin by the Grand Lodge of Iowa Masons denoting his fifty years membership in that fraternity. At the time of his passing Mr. Thoma had reached the age of 82 years, 11 months and eight days. He is survived by four children, John M., Anna, William C. and Fred J., all of Postvllle, eight grandchildren and, eight great-grandchildren, and by a host of other relatives and friends, all of whom will ever hold him in kindly remembrance as a genial gentleman and upright man. The funeral was held from St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city on Sunday afternoon, Dr. R. B. Garten officiating, and the large congregation in attendance and the numerous beautiful floral offerings all attested the high place he held in the hearts and home of the people of this community among whom he, had lived so many years and to whom his life was an open book. The members of the Masonic lodge attended the funeral in a body and had charge of the services at the Postville cemetery, G. W. Hunt of Guttenberg conducting the service for the local lodge.
