Her maiden name was Dorothea Ruckdaschel and she was born August 8, 1849, in Bavaria, Germany. In 1853, she, together with her parents, came to this country settling near Clayton Center. Later the family moved to a farm in Grand Meadow township. On February 15, 1871, she was married by Rev. Seifert to John Thoma of Postville, and by the grace of God this couple were destined to live together for over 63 years. There were four children born to this union, three sons and a daughter, all living, and her passing marks the first break in the family circle. She was a devoted wife and loving mother, and In her closing years she was tenderly and lovingly cared for by her only daughter, Anna, whose devotion and ministrations were deeply appreciated by her and elicited the admiration of the people of this community. Besides her husband she leaves to mourn her passing her four children, namely, John M., Anna, William C. and Fred J., all of Postville. There are also eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who survive, as well as two brothers, Christ and John Ruckdaschel, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Kluss, all of Postville. She was a charter member of the Ladles' Aid Society of St. Paul's Lutheran church of this city, and her demise marks the passing of the last charter member of that society which has served the church so faithfully and well. At the time of her passing Mrs. Thoma was aged 84 years, eight months and one day. Mrs. Thoma was a faithful and loving wife, an indulgent and loving mother, a good neighbor and friend, whose death is mourned by all who knew this estimable lady, and the heartfelt sympathy of all goes out in abundant measure to the age-enfeebled husband, the children, and all those bound to her by a closer tie. The funeral will be held from St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city at two o'clock this afternoon, the Rev. R. B. Garten officiating. Interment will be made in the Postville cemetery.
