Thoma Passes At Hospital This Morning William C. Thoma, 65, lifelong resident of Postville and for many years associated with the business life of this community, passed away at six o'clock this morning at the Postville hospital where he had been a patient for the past several weeks. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at the Schutte funeral home with the Rev. F. R. Ludwig in charge. The Masonic lodge will conduct the services at the grave in Postville cemetery. Mr. Thoma was born in Postville on May 8, 1877, and has been a resident here continuously without interruption. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. John Thoma. After attending the local schools he entered the drug store of his brother, J. M. Thoma, in 1893, continuing at this work until 1914, when he bought an interest in the restaurant and grocery business conducted then by his father and brother, Fred J. Thoma, the father retiring at that time. The business since then had been conducted under the firm name of Thoma Bros. He was married to Miss Emma Senholz on November 22, 1900, and she survives him together with their two children, Harlan Thoma of Des Moines and Delores, Mrs. John J. Scholtes of Sioux City. Also surviving are four grandchildren, the two brothers mentioned above, and one sister, Miss Anna Thoma of this city. Fraternally Mr. Thoma was affiliated with the Masonic and A.O.U.W. lodges of this city. Obituary from the "Globe-Gazette" of Mason City, Iowa dated 14 May 1942: Thoma Services Will Be Friday - - - Prominent Postville Businessman Dies After Year's Illness - - - Postville - William C. Thoma, 65, prominent Postville businessman for the past 50 years, died at the Postville hospital early Wednesday morning, following a year's illness from a heart ailment. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Schutte funeral home with the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church, officiating. Burial will be in the Postville cemetery where Brotherly Love Lodge A. F. and A. M. No. 204 will conduct Mason services at the graveside. Mr. Thoma was born in Postville May 8, 1877, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Thoma, who were among the first pioneer settlers of Postville. He received his education in the Postville schools and in 1893 became associated in the drug business with his brother, John. He was married Nov. 22, 1900, to Emma Senholz. In 1914 he entered the retail grocery and restaurant business with his brother, Fred, and his father, which business he continued to the time of his death. He was a member of the Masonic order, the A.O.U.W. and of St. Paul's Lutheran church. He is survived by his wife; a son Harlan, Des Moines attorney; a daughter, Mrs. Delores Scholtes [sic] of Sioux City; two brothers, John and Fred of Postville; a sister Anna of Postville, and four grandchildren. He married Emma Caroline Dorothy Senholz 22 Nov 1900 in Postville, Allamakee, Iowa.
