Description	:	JOHN THOMAS GILMOUR was born in LaHarpe Township, Hancock County, Illinois on 5 November 1840 and spent his early youth there. Read More	JOHN THOMAS GILMOUR was born in LaHarpe Township, Hancock County, Illinois on 5 November 1840 and spent his early youth there. In late 1850 his father, JOHN WILSON GILMOUR made a decision to move west to the Oregon Territory and in the Spring of 1851, after selling their farm, the family loaded their family possessions into covered wagons and followed the well - traveled trail across the plains to the Oregon country, the lodestone for many pioneers. JOHN WILSON GILMOUR was the blacksmith and skilled wheelwright on this journey and even beyond the authority of the wagon master, the blacksmith's word was law. His son, JOHN THOMAS GILMOUR was only 11 years old when this journey was made and he assumed many of the camp chores and assisted his father in mending and "tightening the wheels" to keep the wagons safe on the trail. The GILMOUR family arrived in Oregon in September 1851, and shortly afterward settled on a homestead near Lebanon in Linn County, Oregon where they lived for about 28 years. JOHN THOMAS GILMOUR, like his father, became a blacksmith. He was married to VIRGINIA LINEBARGER on 26 October 1862 and made their home on a claim near Albany, Oregon where they continued to live until about 1879 and then moved to Silverton, Marion County for a short time before moving to Ellensburg in the Washington Territory in October 1880. They became the parents of twelve children: 1. JEFFERSON D. GILMOUR, born in July 1866 in Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon; he died at home of diphtheria on 15 May 1876 in Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon. 2. ELLEN J. GILMOUR, born 2 September 1867 in Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon; she died at home on 1 October 1867 in Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon. 3. FRANCES IRENE GILMOUR, born 31 July 1868 in Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon; married JOHN "KIDD" LOTHROP in 1885 in Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington and she died on 4 December 1954 in Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington. 4. HELENA BELL GILMOUR, born 18 November 1870 in Albany, Linn County, Oregon; married first JOSEPH E. MILLS on 16 May 1889 in Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington; married second ROBERT VOCKE in 1910 in Washington; married third: JOHN GREER PARKINSON on 11 July 1918 in St. Anthony, Fremont County, Idaho; she died on 9 July 1960 in Hawthorne, Los Angeles County, California. 5. After hearing tales of the wonderful valleys, grassy plains and free lands in Central Washington, JOHN THOMAS GILMOUR decided to move his family there and in October 1880. He and his family departed Oregon by covered wagon and headed over the Satus Trail north to Kittitas County, in the Washington Territory and settled in Ellensburg. JOHN THOMAS GILMOUR established a blacksmithing business there with his brother JAMES ALEXANDER GILMOUR. The first GILMOUR home was the Shaser Hotel, the little hotel built by George Shaser on the corner of Pine and Fourth where the Safeway parking lot is now. Stage coaches were of great importance during the 1880's and 1890's; regular trips were made from the Dalles on the Columbia River through Kittitas County and over the Colockum to the Okanogan mines in north central Washington. The stage line passed through Ellensburg and there were regular shipments of supplies, freight, ore and produce by wagon train. The wheels on the stage coaches and wagons required constant attention and horseshoes did not last long on the roads, if the trails could be called roads. The never ending horseshoeing and wagon repair was entrusted to JOHN THOMAS GILMOUR and his blacksmith shop. JOHN THOMAS GILMOUR was also interested in ranching and later purchased several lots just west of Craig's Hill in Ellensburg, on the corner of Walnut and Third, and this became the GILMOUR home for many years. He remained in Ellensburg until he died on 28 January 1905 and the GILMOUR name will long be remembered in the pioneer history of Ellensburg, Washington.
