COX (Farmer and Stock-raiser, Post-office, Hunnewell). With a good farm of 450 acres well improved, Mr. Cox may be said to be in comfortable circumstances. His life has been one of industry and frugal, intelligent management, so that he well deserves the competence he has accumulated. The 7th of March, 1819, was the day that he was called into being, and to begin that career in life which, if continued to the end, as it has thus far been run, must ultimately result in a happier and better home beyond the grave than has been his fortune to enjoy in this world, peaceful and contented as it has been. Mr. Cox is a native of Virginia, and was 13 years of age when he was brought to Missouri by his parents, James and Elizabeth (Gills) Cox. They settled in Monroe county, where both lived until their deaths. Mr. Cox, himself, resided in that county until 1843, and then came to Shelby county, in which he has since made his home. In April, 1843, he was married to Miss Martha E. Howell, a daughter of John Howell, of Marion county. Her mother is still living at the advanced age of 89. Mr. and Mrs. Cox have had eight children, seven living: Charles, Ellen, James, Mary, Ida, John and Mattie. Mr. and Mrs. C. are members of the Methodist Church. Cox, one of our oldest citizens passed away after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Cox was one of Hunnewell's best citizens and was an industrious and intelligent man; he was at one time in the mercantile business at this place, and for a number of years he was president of the Bank, and made a number one man for that important position. Mr. Cox was born in Virginia on March 7th, 1819, and was 13 years of age when his parents brought him to Missouri and settled in Monroe county, where he resided until 1843 and then came to Shelby county where he lived at the time of his death. He was married in April 1843 to Miss Martha E. Howell of Marion county, and they have raised a family of eight children, seven of whom with his wife survive him, C.W Cox, of Lakenan, Mrs Mary Ragsdale, south of Lakenan, Mrs. James Darby, Port Angeles, Washington, James H. Cox of Waitsburg, Washington, Mrs. W. O. L. Jewett, rs. Ida Green and John W. Cox, of Shelbina. His funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. E. Taylor, pastor of the M. E. Church, South, of which he had been a faithful member for many years. after the discourse his remains were taken to the Cox burying ground southwest of town and laid to rest. The relatives have the sympathy of the community in the loss of one so near and dear to them. (Contributed by Mary Clarkson Turek) John V. Cox. Another old citizen of the county has passed to his reward and this world is the poorer thereby. Like a sheaf of ripe wheat he has been harvested by the Grim reaper. For several weeks there was a struggle between life and the reaper, but on Sunday afternoon, April 15, 1900, at 3 o'clock, death claimed the victory, and he passed quietly to the great beyond. Mr. Cox was by nature, education and habit a strictly honest man. He cherished the old time ideas of honor and integrity and his word was as good as his bond. No man ever questioned his sincerity or uprightness, and he always had the confidence of all who knew him. Quiet, modest and retiring, he lived without ostentation, the life of a plain, manly man. His even temperament, seldom ruffled or excited, no doubt contributed to the length of his days. His health remained excellent, and his strength and the retentation [sic] of his in faculties remarkable until within a few months of the end. John Valentine Cox was born near Lynchburg, Virginia, March 7, 1819, and when a lad in the early thirties came with his parents to Monroe county and settled on a farm three miles southwest of where Hunnewell now stands. There he grew to manhood when he bought land and made a a farm of his own, running up to and inside of what is now the corporate limits of Hunnewell, where be subsequently carried on mercantile business and for years before he died he was president of the Hunnewell bank. In 1843 he married Miss Martha Howell and they raised eight children, one, Miss Winnifred, died just as she attained maturity. The other children are C. W, Cox of Lakenan, Mrs. Mary Ragsdale, south of Lakenan; Mrs. S. Ella Jewett of Shelbina, Mrs. Mattie Darby of Port Angelus, Washington; James H. Cox of Waitsburg, Washington; John W. Cox and Mrs. Ida V. Green of Shelbina. These with the widow, also a host of relatives including two sisters remain to mourn his loss. He was a kind husband and an indulgent father, and all his relatives honor his memory. Funeral services were held at the house Monday afternoon and his remains were laid to rest in the family burying ground on the old Cox place, where sleep the mortal part of his parents, brothers and sisters. For more than half a century he was a member of the M. E. church, South, and though modest in speaking of religious matters he always maintained a consistent Christian life and character.
