Another tie which connects us with the pioneer days has been severed. Once more we are reminded that sooner or later all of us must submit to the great change which is the common lot of mortals. Death is no respecter of persons. All who are born must die. After much suffering patiently borne, Mrs. Cox passed away quietly without a struggle Friday afternoon, November 17, 1911 For a number of years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. James E. Ragsdale, and there she closed her earthly existence. Born in Marion county, Missouri, August 23rd, 1823, she married at the age of 19, John V. Cox, and came to this county to live on a farm near where Hunnewell now stands. There she raised eight children, seven of whom survive her, to wit: C. W. Cox, of Lakenan; John W. Cox of Monroe City, Mrs Ragsdale, Mrs, Jewett and Mrs Green of Shelbina, Mrs. Darby of Pomeroy, Wash., and James H. Cox of Hepner, Ore. In caring for and instructing her children she was faithful, earnest, noble. She was a great reader and even into very old age, kept herself posted on the affairs of our country and the world. She had a lively interest in all that pertained to the welfare of humanity, and was an interesting conversationalist. She served her generation faithfully, meeting every duty with fidelity and maintained a conscience void of offence. She was always helpful, not to her children only, but to all who came within her reach. In early womanhood she joined the M.E. church, South and ever followed faithfully her religious convictions. She was steadfast and unflinching in what she believed right, and met the changes incident to the world with patience and fortitude. She was not afraid to die; for she had to her credit a life well spent. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday at noon. Rev. C. O. Ransford, of Clarence, officiating, and the remains were taken by train to Hunnewell and then conveyed to the old Cox burying ground, 2 1/2 miles southwest, where the remains of John V. Cox have reposed for over eleven years. Besides her children, she left 24 grand and 11 great grand-children---Shelbina Democrat.
