Again the Death Angel has visited our town and this time taken away our oldest citizen, Mrs. Mary Price, who passed away at her home Wednesday night at 9:15 o'clock, after an illness of several weeks. "Aunt" Matilda as she was familiarly known to every one, was born in Lynchburg Va., on April 12, 1824 and was 90 years, 10 months and 21 days old, and had spent the greater part of her life in Missouri. She was of those sweet and kindly old ladies and was loved by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her death, one daughter, Miss Bettie, and one adopted daughter, Miss Mary Hendricks, besides many other relatives. Funeral services will be held at the home this afternoon, Friday at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. R. O. Triplett of this city, and Rev. Aunt Matilda, as she was generally known, had lived in Hunnewell vicinity for the past seventy years and was respected by all. One daughter, Mrs. Wash Moore, survives. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the family residence conducted by Rev. Thompson Penn of Monroe City. Shelby County Herald, Shelbyville, Missouri, 10 Mar 1915, Wed; Page 1, Column 4 Mrs. Matilda Price The subject of this sketch was one of the pioneer settles of this vicinity and come to Missouri with her parents, James and Elisabeth Cox, from Virginia at the age of 11 years and settled on a farm south of Hunnewell. She was born at Lynchburg, Va. on April 12, 1824 and passed quietly away at her home in this city on the evening of Wednesday, March 3, 1915 after the age of 90 yrs. 10 mo. and 21 days. Deceased was united in marriage to Robert Price of Monroe Co. in the year of 1839 [sic] and to this union were born six children. All except one, Mrs. Bettie Moore, passed away with the husband and father many years ago, and since their death Mrs. Moore has been the constant companion, adviser, and loving and faithful daughter to her mother. She was married at the age of 15 years, and Mr. Price died in the year 1854, thus her married life covered a period of about 15 years and her widowhood about 61 years. She had lived a consistent member of the Methodist church for 73 years being converted under the ministry of Rev. Richard Sharp at Deer Creek at the age of 18 years and up to the time when she became to old to attend services took an active part in all her church work and during her last years tho not allowed to attend church on account of her years, loved to know all the church news and was eager to hear of anything that was for the churches good. Mrs. Price as a niece of Gen. Leslie Combes of Lexington, Ky., who knew personally, Temcumsiah. She came to Hunnewell to see the first train go through our town, and has lived through the completion of the telephone, automobile, electric lights and airship age, and none but one who has lived a good temperate life could have endured the hardships of frontier life, wife and mother and experience the hardships incident to many years and come down to the grave with so perfect an eyesight, hearing, presence of mind and so young in countenance as did Mrs. Price. Sorrows, she had many, but in and through all she saw and admitted of the possibilities of a blessing in disguise. Mrs. Price had lived to see father mother, husband, and children, and brother and sisters all pass to the better land and she was the last and youngest of nine children to be called to their eternal home. Truly her life was a benediction and blessing. Aside from raising a large family of her own, she also was the only mother Miss Mary Hendricks ever known, having taken her into her home and heart when a mere babe and has raised her. Funeral services were held at the family home Friday afternoon Mar. 5th at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Robt. Penn of Monroe City an old and tried friend of Mrs. Price, and Rev. Triplett of this city, after which her remains were laid to rest in the Cox cemetery, south of town. She leaves to mourn her death, one daughter, Mrs. Bettie Moore, and one adopted daughter, Miss Mary Hendricks, many nieces, nephews great nieces and great nephews and host of friends.
