Description	:	John Walker "Jack" Coleman was born on a farm at Rix Mills, Muskingum County, Ohio, Dec. 28, 1871. He attended the Muskingum Preparatory School of the College and, in 1892, moved to Wallace County, Kansas, where he taught school for two years. He then moved to Johnson County, Kansas, and taught near Gardner where his brother, James Henry, practiced medicine. He attended the Muskingum Preparatory School of the College and, in 1892, moved to Wallace County, Kansas, where he taught school for two years. He then moved to Johnson County, Kansas, and taught near Gardner where his brother, James Henry, practiced medicine. Jack's first venture in the newspaper business was in Olathe, Kansas, where he became editor of the Times Harold. He later sold his interests in that newspaper and moved to Effingham Kansas, where he bought an interest in the New Leaf. There, he married Martha Walker, daughter of a wealthy lumberman and banker. In 1906, he and Martha moved to Atchison, Kansas, to join E.W. "Ed" Howe, a famous journalist known as "The Sage of Potato Hill." When Ed Howe retired, Jack became a member of the Globe Publishing Company which bought the newspaper. Martha Walker Coleman and Jack Coleman had four children: Mary Martha, Ruth, Lavinia, and Wilson Walker Coleman. Martha died in childbirth in 1910, along with her infant. Two years later, June 3, 1912, Jack Coleman married Emma Grace Ballinger. Jack was then editor and publisher of the Atchison Daily Globe. Jack and Grace then had two sons in rapid succession: John Ballinger Coleman (June 14, 1914) and James Henry Coleman (Nov. 3, 1915). Grace was pregnant with their third son, when Jack died suddenly of meningitis, Nov. 14, 1916, at the beginning of the great flu epidemic that killed thousands of Americans. According to Grace, Jack came home from the newspaper one evening, complaining of not feeling well. He went to bed and died within three days. The newspaper printed a glowing obituary, saying: "The irreparable loss in the death of J.W. Coleman is also a loss to the highest type of citizenship in Atchison and the community...Whole-souled and big-hearted, sincere and earnest in everything he did, Jack Coleman lived his life as he believed it. Those who knew him well admired him beyond expression because of the intense love he bore toward his home, family, church, and business, his hatred of hypocrisy, and his indefatigable industry and rugged honesty." Ed Howe led the entire newspaper staff to the services. The paper carriers sent a funeral bouquet. The governor phoned his condolences. The famous journalist William Allen White sent condolences and praise for Jack's career. Son Jean Wilfred Coleman was born January 9, 1917, two months after Jack's death. Grace was thrown into dire financial circumstances. Because his death was so unexpected, Jack had died intestate. His estate and that of his wealthy first wife were divided among his four older children. Grace's father and her beloved sister "Dot" stepped in to help support and care for Grace and the children. Because of the estates involved, the four children from Jack's first marriage were placed under the guardianship of a savings and loan officer and their Grandmother Walker (Martha Walker's mother). The older girls enjoyed financial independence and were soon out on their own. Mary married Marvin Jackson who became an extremely successful businessman. Ruth did not have a happy life and ended up in Seattle, Washington. Lavinia, the youngest girl, stayed around, living between her grandmother's home and Grace's for several years before eloping and moving to California. Walker was sent to live with Jack's sister in Oskaloosa after Grandmother Walker's death. He married there, then moved with his wife to Colorado where he established his family and owned a large Coors distributorship. All three of the sons of Grace and Jack Coleman were very popular in high school, good at sports, good scholars, and were graduated from the University of Kansas. John attended medical school at Northwestern University and became a highly respected radiologist in Minneapolis, Minnesota. James was editor/publisher of a popular magazine in Sydney, Australia. Jean was a successful businessman in Newton, Kansas. All three were accomplished musicians. Grace died in 1966.
