He was graduated from the University of Kansas, where he was the editor of the avant garde school publication, the Sour Owl, and where he was one of the originators of the Rock Chalk Revue and the Rock Chalk KU chant. He was graduated from the University of Kansas, where he was the editor of the avant garde school publication, the Sour Owl, and where he was one of the originators of the Rock Chalk Revue and the Rock Chalk KU chant. After graduation, he was sent to Australia during World War II and stayed there, marrying the beautiful socialite, Nedra Kathleen Ryrie Levy. Nedra was a descendant of one of Australia's most prominent and affluent pioneer families, the daughter of Charles Edward Lascelles Ryrie and Dorothy Herrmann Ryrie. James became a prominent businessman, residing with Nedra on Embassy Row in Sydney. He was the editor and publisher of a popular photography magazine in Sydney and the author of two books on the subject of photography. He was proud of the fact that he introduced his mother's (Grace Coleman Adams) chili to Sydney. The recipe is still served in a popular diner. He also was a founder of the American Club in Sydney. He and Nedra had two children, Julia and Jeremy James. Nedra died of cancer in 1963 at the age of 49. James continued to travel the world, entertaining American jazz musicians in his home, attending jazz festivals across the globe, and enjoying a vast social life, included in which were many Atchison friends.James married his second wife Betty in Sydney, and they happily traveled and entertained until James' death in Sydney in 2004. His ashes were flown to the U.S. and buried alongside his mother in Atchison. It is interesting to read his brother Jean's recollections of growing up with James: "James was slender of build and well-coordinated. He played basketball and football in high school, read constantly, and was a fine musician. He played both trumpet and French horn in the high school orchestra and band. I was extremely proud of James when the orchestra was to play the Oberon Overture at the orchestra contest. The overture opens with a French horn solo. A real crisis occurred when the French horn soloist was picked up for stealing only a few days before the contest. James was playing trumpet; however, the director asked him to take over the French horn solo, and James performed flawlessly! He also put his talent to work in dance bands, and finished college with cash in the bank!"
