The 1820 Benton, Ontario County, New York census shows that the Johnson family included "5 free white persons." Benton became part of Yates County in 1823. The 1830 census for Benton, Yates County, New York shows "4 free white persons" in the John Johnson family. "The family moved to Washtenaw County, Michigan... The 1830 census for Benton, Yates County, New York shows "4 free white persons" in the John Johnson family. "The family moved to Washtenaw County, Michigan and settled in Lodi Township, just north of Saline, Michigan to be near a daughter who had moved to Michigan earlier."* The Johnson family and the George Rowley family were both on the 1840 Lodi Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan census. In 1850, John W Johnson farmed and lived with the George and Charity (Early) Rowley family in Fayette County, Iowa. Their daughter, Lydia Serena Rowley, 23, born in Steuben County, New York, married John W Johnson in the village of Elgin in Fayette County on 25 November 1850. The young couple spent a short time in Bradford, Chickasaw County, Iowa before moving to a farm near Bassett in Chickasaw Township, Chickasaw County, where they remained for life. John W Johnson, 42, registered for the Civil War draft in Chickasaw County in 1863 but he was not called to serve. Their children, Charity Elizabeth, Elvira, John Lewis, Elfreida, Charlotte Carrie, George William, "Ey" Hugh, and Effie (who died young) were raised in the then-bustling little farm community near Bassett. After John's death on 8 April 1900, Lydia remained on the farm. On the 1910 census, Lydia lived with her son George (listed as head of household, farmer with a mortgage, employer), her granddaughter Zella and son Ey (farmer, wage earner).
