Description	:	John Watters was the eldest child of Godfrey and Sarah White Watters. He was born at St. Margaret's Westminster Parish, Anne Arundel County, Md, but moved with his family to what is now Thomas Run, Harford County, Md around 1750. John married Providence Baker in 1756. He was born at St. Margaret's Westminster Parish, Anne Arundel County, Md, but moved with his family to what is now Thomas Run, Harford County, Md around 1750. John married Providence Baker in 1756. After her death, he married Mary Horner in 1767 and both were converts to the Methodist faith in 1771. "They were happy in the love of God and testified to the knowledge of sins forgiven." John had informed his brother William that God had "blessed him with His pardoning love, and expressed being very happy in the Lord." John had been a very moral man and possessed so much of the form of religion, but found it hard to come as a sinner stripped of all, to the Lord Jesus. John gave his youngest brother William all of the advice in his power, then knelt down with him, and with a low, soft voice, which was frequently interrupted by tears, offered up a fervent prayer to God for William's present salvation. Rev. William Watters would later write in his autobiography that his eldest brother was instrumental in his salvation. "My brother's house became a meeting place where many were often uncommonly blessed at such times with the presence and power of the most high God." It was in the home of John Watters, one of the earliest Methodist chapels, that the 1777 Methodist Conference convened. The Watters homestead on Deer Creek was probably chosen as a more quiet retreat in contrast to the unrest in the cities during the Revolutionary War. Here was one of the first Methodist societies in Md, and the Watters family composed a large part of the original class. John Watters died in 1774 at Thomas Run from pleurisy after a few days illness, in his 45th year. His end was peace, but a few minutes before his spirit returned to God, he had his family called around him and addressed them one by one, giving them his last and dying advice. After which he sang several verses of a hymn, and concluded with the following very pertinent words: Through all eternity to Thee, a grateful song I'll raise. But, Oh! Eternity's too short to utter all Thy praise!
