Elliott of Center Township died April 11 of heart disease and was buried April 12 at Enterprise near his beautiful residence, by a large concourse of sympathizing friends. A few lines on the vista of years through which he passed might be interesting to readers of the Empire. J.W. Elliott was born in Ohio and moved with his parents to Iowa when 18 years old. He was raised on a farm. In 1870 he married Miss Clara Read and came to Kansas in 1872. He was one of the young men who came here on business. He bought out a tired homesteader on Pipe Creek in Meredith Township and placed his homestead entry on it to stay and without any more financial backing than the ordinary man came to Kansas with, he began the struggle. He saw the sunshine and rain and all vegetables grow luxuriantly. He also saw the grasshopper plague. The eastern papers reported the hoppers so thick they darkened the sun and piled in such high drifts on the railroads that the trains were blocked and when they died or left there was nothing for man or beast to live on. This was in 1874, and in 1875 Kansas put on her best dress, had good all around crops and all were happy again. Then came the chinch bugs - millions upon millions of them - and said to be one of the largest crops Kansas ever raised. At least when they went through a grain field there was but little left for the man who did the work, and they stayed with us a good many years too. Then to encourage the homesteader, the drought came along and stayed with us until we were nearly all bankrupt. Then last, but not least, was the mortgage epidemic that was fatal in about fifty percent of the cases that it attacked. Through all these drawbacks, Mr. Elliott's faith in the resources of Kansas never failed. When a blizzard was blowing, if met he always had a cordial shake of the hand for you, and if anything was said about the storm, he would remark that "dog days are coming and will warm this up all right." He was an optimist in all conditions and by the way he was a man of no ordinary business ability and though handicapped by ill health for a number of years and unable to do manual labor, he succeeded with the aide of a frugal and industrious wife in accumulating a handsome property of 620 acres of land well improved and worth at least #25,000. To their union two sons were born, Charles and Louis. Charles is living on the old homestead. Lou enlisted in the regular army and served three years, was sent to Cuba and saw Col. Roosevelt storm San Juan hill. It made the boy an honorably discharged soldier. The widow and sons are provided with all the earth can give to make them comfortable. Following is a favorite poem of Mr. Elliott that he requested, before death, should be printed with his obituary notice: "I'm safe in my boat, but I'll watch and wait For another boat will bring my mate My faithful mate who in calm and strife Went with me through the trials of life. I left my home at the close of day And through the mist of a radiant hand I was borne away to the border land. O faithful mate, though hidden from view Through a thinly veil I am guarding you; And will linger near til your work is done And the sails are unfurled to the western sun And your boat's keel grates on the golden land.
