ANSWERS THE LAST ROLL CALL Civil War Veteran Dies at His Home in Creighton on Tuesday Evening John Wesley Hildreth, one of the last of the Civil War veterans in Creighton, passed away at his home on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. His death was attributed to old age complications. The deceased was born in Licking County, Ohio on December 23, 1845 and died at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 14 days. In 1852 he came with his parents to Iowa. In the days of his youth he followed the occupation of farming and was also employed some at the mason trade. At the outbreak of the Civil War and the call for volunteers, Mr. Hildreth enlisted on August 11, 1862, at the age of 16 years, at Quasqueton, Ia. and served three years with Co. F Regiment of Iowa Infantry. So anxious was Mr. Hildreth to serve his county, that he misrepresented his age in order to get in the service. At the close of this conflict, he returned to Quasqueton, Iowa and on April 15, 1967 was united in marriage to Olive G. Walton. This union was bless with seven children, four boys and three girls. Two of the girls died in infancy. The family removed to Knox County in 1885 and resided on a farm north of Winnetoon. About nineteen years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Hildreth retired from the farm and moved to Creighton. Mrs. Hildreth preceded her husband in death about four years ago. From that time on Mr. Hildreth lived with his daughter, Mrs. Anna Hathaway and up to the time of his demise. About seven years ago, Mr. Hildreth lost his eye sight and he has been given the best of care by his daughter. Mr. Hildreth is also numbered among the pioneer settlers of Knox County and endured many of the ups and downs of the sturdy pioneer. He was a friend of every acquaintance and his death will be mourned buy many. He leaves to mourn four sons, James of Verdigre; Harry of Algona, Wash.; Parker of Burke, S.D. and John of Omaha and one daughter, Mrs. Anna Hathaway of Creighton. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church on this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Wilson. Full military honors will be accorded the Civil War veteran by the Creighton American Legion Post.
