Description	:	John Wesley Mosby was born about 1837, in Indiana. He was the son of Nancy Jane (Mitchel) and William H Mosby. John had several siblings. His known older siblings included; Mary born about 1828 and Jefferson Monroe born about 1834. They also had a younger brother; William H. Mosby, born in July 1839. The following year their father died on April 12th at the young age of 30, leaving behind his wife Nancy with at least four small children ranging in age from 9 months to 12 years. Shortly after William's death Nancy is found in the 1840 census, taken... Read More	John Wesley Mosby was born about 1837, in Indiana. He was the son of Nancy Jane (Mitchel) and William H Mosby. John had several siblings. His known older siblings included; Mary born about 1828 and Jefferson Monroe born about 1834. They also had a younger brother; William H. Mosby, born in July 1839. The following year their father died on April 12th at the young age of 30, leaving behind his wife Nancy with at least four small children ranging in age from 9 months to 12 years. Shortly after William's death Nancy is found in the 1840 census, taken in October. She was living in New Boston, Mercer County, Illinois with the children, listed as Nancy Mosby Head of Household with 7 Total Free White Persons: Males, three under the age of 5 (John, William & 1 unknown), one – age 5 thru 9 (Jefferson Monroe); Females, one – age 5 thru 9 (unknown), one – age 10 thru 14 (Mary), & one – age 20 thru 29 (Mother Nancy). After arriving in Mercer County, John’s mother then married Stephen Dodson in 1841 and they had one son, Stephen Francis. Her second husband died shortly after the birth if their son and she married a third time in 1845 to Henry Crittenden. To this union was born two more children; Elvira and Harley. By the 1860 census John's mother Nancy is widowed again living in New Boston with three of her children, 21 year old William, 14 year old Elvira and 9 year old Harley. John married Louisa E Myers on December 25, 1855, in Mercer County, Illinois when he was 18 years old. Louisa was the daughter of Col Andrew and Mary (Lloyd) Myers. They had seven children in 23 years; the oldest three were born in New Boston, IL and the rest were all born in Wapello County, IA. After the birth of their third child, John Wesley Mosby served in the military. According to the Veteran's Index Data Base of 1861 – 1865, John enlisted for duty in the Civil War on August 1, 1862. He mustered in on September 10, 1862, in Springfield, Illinois, training at Camp Butler when he was 25 years old. Civil War Records state that he enrolled in active duty on February 25, 1863 as a 1st Sergeant with CO G 124th Illinois Infantry, and was later promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. The Illinois, Databases of Illinois Veterans Index lists John’s service entry place as Memphis, TN. He was joined by GOV YATES for a period of 3 YRS. His Muster in Place is listed as Vicksburg, MS. John Wesley Mosby is among those soldiers listed as being Captured in the Civil War at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on July 4, 1863. John was hurt during the battle and was then released before his three years were up. He mustered out on the 15th of Aug 1865 at Camp Douglas, in Chicago. Camp Douglas was used during the last part of the Civil War as a detention camp for paroled Confederate prisoners pending their formal exchange for Union prisoners. John’s older brother Jefferson Monroe Mosby had also served in the Civil War prior to him, enlisting in Company G 27th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. Unfortunately Jefferson was killed in The Battle of Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which was fought on November 25, 1863, as part of the Chattanooga Campaign. He was only 29 years old at the time of his death. After returning home to New Boston from the Civil War, John engaged in farming for a time before relocating his family to Eddyville, Iowa in Wapello County. While living there he worked as both a Grocer and a Billiard Hall Keeper. Later in life, John lived in the Leavenworth National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Western Branch located in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was admitted on the 7th of May 1900 and discharged at his own request on the 30th of Jan 1907. After his discharge John joined his wife Louisa and son Clyde in California where they moved to live near their daughters; Della (Mosby) Campbell and Jean (Mosby) Crown. Louisa died in 1909 in Humboldt County, CA. I found no burial records for her so I’m not sure what cemetery she was buried in? In the 1910 census 73 year old John is living in Alameda, California with his daughter Jean (Mosby) Crown and her family. He died just two years later on October 30, 1912, in Napa County, California, having lived a long full life of 75 years. He was buried in a Veteran’s Cemetery in Napa County.
