His family moved to Ohio where he and Catherine Ann Forney were married in Tuscarawas County, Ohio March 18, 1852. He and Catherine were the parents of twelve children. After living in Ohio and Iowa, the family moved to Riverview (later Pleasanton, Nebraska) in 1883 or 1884. John W. applied for a homestead in Section 6 of Cedar Township, Buffalo County.
