"Bill" Myers, 83, of 1105 Jackson Blvd., Rochester, passed away at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday at Life Care Center of Rochester. He was born on Feb. 27, 1924, in Rochester, the son of Ray E. and Arline (Lowman) Myers. Bill attended school at Columbia Grade School and graduated from Rochester High School in 1943. Bill served two years in the U.S. Army, 18 months during the Korean War. He was called back to serve from the reserves. At this time, he was dating Ramona Ann "Monie" Caywood. Considering the possibility he might not return back from war, they decided to get married on Sept. 9, 1950, in Rochester, 10 days prior to him returning to war. After returning from service, he purchased the Mobil bulk oil business. In 1977, Bill and his wife purchased The Newsstand from Gates Thompson, where they enjoyed the newspapers, magazines, gifts and greeting cards. The Newsstand provided the couple the opportunity to meet the nicest people in the world as they came in to browse and make friends for a lifetime. They sold The Newsstand in 1992. The first few years of retirement were spent traveling to Florida and Arizona visiting relatives, school and army buddies, and the Chicago Cubs training camp in Mesa, Ariz. At home, Bill worked for more than four years at Gas America, meeting old Newsstand friends and making new ones that came in off the bypass. Bill loved Rochester and Fulton County. He knew at one time there were 18 round barns in the county, far more than any other county. He was a member of the committee that originated, developed and initiated the first Round Barn Festival. With a lot of hard work, volunteers, good ideas and dedication, it took off and is still enjoyed. Bill was president the first two years and remained a board member for five years, and one year as Grand Marshal for the Round Barn Parade. He was also Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge, two-term president of the Rochester Lions Club, one-term president of the Retail Merchants, four-year board member of the Rochester and Lake Manitou Chamber of Commerce, four-year member of the Rochester School Board and on the Fulton County Housing Board for 16 1/2 years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, 32nd degree Mason and the American Legion. He enjoyed his class reunions, while reminiscing about the "Ole" days; he would walk the classes up and down Main Street pointing out what store or business used to be where now an entirely different establishment stands. He loved music; he especially enjoyed all the "Big Bands" that came to the Colonial Hotel on Lake Manitou. He so loved his family, who will miss him so very much, but he has made and left so many wonderful memories for each to share, some funny and some sad. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ramona Ann Myers, Rochester; daughter, Raynee' Marlene Myers, Rochester; son, Jon Myers, Rochester; grandson, Damon E. Myers, Rochester; brother-in-law, Robert D. and wife Nancy Caywood, Rochester; and nieces and nephews, Linda Myers Reno and husband Lee, Indianapolis, Debbie Caywood Magon and husband Richie, Pompano Beach, Fla., Tammie Caywood, Rochester, Joe and wife Vicki Caywood of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Brett Garfield; his parents, Ray E. Myers, who Bill was very proud of when he was Mayor from 1960-1963, and his wonderful mother, Arlen Myers; brother, Jacob in 1919; brother, James Richard; sister, Joan Blacketor and husband Otto; and niece, Vickie Caywood Parsons. His graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester, with the Rev. Junior Bose officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Ministries Food Pantry or the Shriners in care of children of special needs. Arrangements are by Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester.
