Colonel John W. DODD, the son of David Dodd, was an auctioneer and practiced in Berkeley County for 40 years. He was elected county assessor for two terms, and while in that position put into operation a system of equal valuation. John W. Dodd was the Democratic candidate for Sheriff of Berkeley County against the Hon. James H. Smith, but was defeated by a small majority. He was proprietor of the Continental Hotel, a popular hostelry in the 1890's, occupying the corner of the Public Square on the site of the Old National Bank building. He married Miss Georgia Jefferson, a member of an old established family of the county. He died in 1923. _____ John married Georgie Lee (Jefferson) Dodd (8 Sept 1870 - 15 Oct 1953) in Dec 1892. In the 1900 U.S. Census, John and Georgie were living in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia. DODD, John W., 66, widely known auctioneer, former assessor of Berkeley County, and a Democrat leader, was stricken with paralysis while driving his automobile near Berkeley Springs June 12 and died while he was being rushed to a local hospital. He was alone when stricken and lost control of his vehicle, causing it to drift to one side of the road. Mr. DODD spent his entire life in Berkeley County and is survived by his wife, a daughter, two brothers, and three sisters. He had been a delegate to numerous state and national Democratic conventions. 13 June 1923 _____ The other known child of John and Georgie was Lee Jefferson Dodd (born 9 Dec 1898). She was born in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
