John was born September 10, 1927, in Anthon, Iowa, to Theodore J. and Emma (Benker) Fundermann. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and graduated from Anthon High School in 1945. On February 22, 1948, John was united in marriage to Helen I. Putzier of Anthon. The couple lived in Anthon until 1965, at which time they moved to Battle Creek, IA, where they continued to make their home. John was a member and former elder of St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. He was a skilled handyman and jack-of-all-trades who was employed in many capacities during his lifetime. Over the years, he worked as an electrician, a farmer, and even as Mayor of Battle Creek. He put his talents to work at a gas station, a construction company, and at Johnson Oil Company in Battle Creek, and traveled for GOMACO as well. Woodworking, camping, attending threshing shows, hunting, and fishing were among his hobbies. Survivors include his wife, Helen; five children and their spouses, Mary Ellen (Boots) and Jeri Goodmann of Battle Creek, Kathy and Butch Williams of Ida Grove, John E. and Kate Fundermann, Jr. of Hutchinson, MN, Steve Fundermann and special friend Jodee Thurston of Cherokee; and Cindy Hupke and special friend Steve Stoos of Battle Creek; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Theodore P. Fundermann, Paul Fundermann, and Wayne Fundermann and wife Diane, all of Anthon, Edward (Jake) Fundermann of Battle Creek, and Frank Fundermann and wife Carol of Red Oak, IA; three sisters, Pauline Osborne of Buffalo, MO, Judy Thompson and husband Duane of Williams, MN, and Eileen Bumsted and husband Gary of Anthon; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and one granddaughter.
