Hickle and Elizabeth Cole OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, June 8, 1937 JOHN HICKLE John Hickle, of Wayne county, formerly of Chariton, died at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines on May 27, 1937, at the age of 46 years, 1 month and 28 days. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, May 31, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Holmes in Confidence, conducted by Rev. Everett Hollingshead, of Chariton, and burial was in the Confidence cemetery. John Hickle, son of Elisha and Elizabeth Hickle, was born March 29, 1891. With his parents he lived in Lucas county until after he had attained his manhood. He was married in Chariton on September 11, 1916, to Frances Allison, and they established their home in Confidence. To them four children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. Elmer Terry, of Des Moines, and John Hickle Jr., of Melrose. Mrs. Hickle died in 1923, leaving him with two little children to care for, and with the aid of kind relatives and friends, he performed the task with courage and loyalty. Mr. Hickle was a veteran of World War I, serving 23 months overseas in Company A 374th Ammunition Train. While in the service he faced death many times. Two trucks were destroyed while he was operating them but he was uninjured. About ten years ago he met with an auto accident near Milo, and suffered an injury to his spine and fractured the vertebrae, which left him an invalid and caused him constant suffering for the remainder of his life. For some time he was cared for in the home of his sister, Mrs. Ed Holmes and husband, and later entered the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. Several years ago he was converted during a Pentecostal revival and was very definite concerning his faith and belief in the Lord. Besides his children and their families he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Holmes, of Melrose, and Mrs. Pearl Wilson, of Chariton, and one brother, Lonnie Hickle, of Melrose, and several nieces and nephews.
