BILL TAWES BURIED THURSDAY Aged Resident Ill For Sometime Mr. John William Nelson Tawes, retired boat builder and seafood packer, and one of the community's best known citizens, died at his home on 7th street Monday evening at the age of 86. He suffered a paralytic stroke about three years ago. On Sept 11th he entered the Marine Hospital in Baltimore for treatment, and returned home last Sunday. Familiarly known as Capt. "Bill," he was born in Crisfield, the son of the late Edward and Grace Lawson Tawes. For many years he worked with his brothers in the seafood business. A man of strong convictions, he expressed himself frankly on subjects in which he was interested. Capt. "Bill" had many friends in the community who held him in high regard for the many fine qualities he possessed. He had been a member of the Methodist church since he was a young man, and had celebrated his 53rd wedding anniversary in June. Funeral services were held at the Bradshaw Funeral Parlors Thursday afternoon at 3:30, conducted by Revs. Melvin E. Wheatley and J. Yancey Fincher. Interment was in the Crisfield cemetery. Bearers were his grandchildren. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hettie Dize Tawes, three daughters, Mrs. Agnes Heaton Whitworth, Salisbury; Mrs. A. E. Green, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Charlotte Ragan, Marion, Md; and two sons, Herman A. Tawes, Bayonne, N. J., and Edward Tawes of Crisfield. One brother, Isaac H. Tawes of Crisfield, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. Published in The Crisfield Times, Crisfield, Maryland, Friday, October 4, 1946, p. 1
