Tawes Is Claimed By Death Passes Away On Thursday At Somerset Avenue Home Was Long Prominent In Town And Country At his beautiful home on Somerset avenue, shortly after 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, the soul of James C. Tawes passed out to its Maker and the body went to rest. Mr. Tawes had been in failing health for the past three or four years, being afflicted with cancer of the kidneys, and he had been under the treatment of eminent specialists in Baltimore and other cities, but without permanent relief, and after being confined to his home in his last illness for several weeks, he closed his eyes in sleep on Thursday. The son of the late Edward and Grace Tawes of this city, James C. Tawes was one of the most prominent residents of Somerset county, and had for many years been identified with the business, social and political life of the county. With his brother, Mr. Isaac H. Tawes, he was engaged in the seafood business, the firm of Tawes & Co. being one of the most widely known of Crisfield dealers. He was high in the councils of the Republican party, one of the recognized county leaders, and had been entrusted with many political posts of honor and responsibility. Mr. Tawes served as Postmaster of Crisfield under the Harrison Administration, was Fish Commissioner for the Eastern Shore under the Lowndes State Administration, which position he resigned to accept the Collectorship at the Crisfield Custom House under McKinley. He continued as collector of the Port of Crisfield under President Roosevelt. For several years Mr. Tawes was a member of the Republican State Central Committee for Somerset county, and had represented this county on many occasions as Delegate to Republican State Conventions. Mr. Tawes was a prominent member of Immanuel M. E. Church and had been a member of the official board for many years. He was also a well-known member of the Masonic order, a member of the Modern Woodmen, and a director of the Bank of Crisfield. A gentleman of charming personality, courteous and affable, James C. Tawes was loved and respected by a large circle of friends and admirers, to whom his death will bring deep regret. Mr. Tawes was 59 years of age and is survived by his widow, who before marriage was Miss Margaret Croswell, and one daughter, Mrs. Thomas C. Hill, of Crisfield.
