OBITUARY: John William Peters--It is with a keen sense of irreparable loss that I write the obituary sketch of J. W. Peters. No one was more generally respected than was John Peters. It is mildly speaking to say that he will be sadly missed by his family , his neighbors, and many friends. John William Peters was born at Weeping Water, Nebraska, March 6, 1883, and died very suddenly at his Burwell home, the morning of April 17, 1946, at the age of 63 years, 1 month, and 11 days. He was educated in the Weeping Water schools and at the age of twelve years was confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Avoca, Nebraska. About 1902 John's parents purchased a ranch on the Calamus river in Loup County, later sold to J. V. Delashmutt. The family moved to Loup County, living on the ranch for a few years, then returning to their home in eastern Nebraska. John assisted his father on the farm near Weeping Water and the Calamus river ranch. On December 13, 1905, Miss Nellie Britton and John W. Peters were united in marriage at the home of Miss Britton, north of Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Britton were pioneer citizens of this section and Nellie was a teacher in the Loup County schools. They made their home on the Peters ranch a short time, then moved to one of the Peters' farms near Weeping Water, residing there three years. They then returned to Loup County and purchased the farm south of the old Kent town site. Here they made their home continuously until moving to Burwell in the fall of 1944. John improved his farm with modern buildings. To the south in Custer County, he added pasture lands. The Peters place is one of the outstanding farms in Loup County. In August 1941, John was stricken with encephalitis. His life lingered in the balance for many days. At last, however, he began to improve slowly and returned to fairly good health. Finally, they decided to take life easier and moved to Burwell. His youngest son, Gordon, is operating the farm. The bereaved family are his wife, Nellie, residing in Burwell, one daughter, Mrs. Deloris Lyon, of Lincoln, Nebraska, two sons, Britton and Gordon of Loup County, his father and mother Mr. and Mrs. William Peters of Weeping Water, Nebraska; three sisters, Mrs. John Cole and Miss Matilda Peters of Weeping Water and Mrs. Robert Draver of Burwell: three brothers, Albert and Walter of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Tim of Lynden, Kansas; six grandchildren, Joan, Marilyn, Roland and Larry Bruce Peters, Stanley and Betty Lyon. Written by Marcia C. Smith. Funeral services were held at the Christina Church in Burwell Saturday afternoon with Rev. Harris officiating. Pall bearers were Willima Bromwich, H. D. Kraus, Glen Walker, Andy Harbel, Louis Bohy and Vernon Dye. Interment was made at the Kent Cemetery. Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Lyon and family, Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. William Peters and Matilda and Mrs. John Cole of Weeping Water; Walter and Albert Peters of Sheridan, Wyoming; Mr. and Mrs. Tim Peters, Lyndon, Kansas; Jake and Arthur Hild, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hild and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Engerson, Plattsmouth; Wallace Hunter, Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hild, Murray; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Knabe and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gansenmar, Nehawka; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Brener and Charles and Wm Philpot Calloway: Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bolli and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Franzen, Arcadia; Jack Britton, Sargent; and Miss Dorothy Draver, Lincoln, Nebraska.
