John was born Feb. 16, 1927 on a ranch south of Benchland, Montana. He attended school in Benchland and moved to Windham in 1935. He graduated from Windham High School in 1944. When he was 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II on a minesweeper attached to the 58th Task Force under Admiral Bull Halsey in the South Pacific, which operated from Guam, Okinawa and onto Japan. The minesweeper was one of the first ships to sweep the harbors for mines after the atomic bombs were dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. John returned to the United States and was honorably discharged at Chamberlain Air Field in St. Paul, MN. He arrived home in August of 1946. John attended Rocky Mountain College in Billings, owned a service station in Havre, and worked for O'Neill Line Co. He married Emma Phillips on March 31, 1951 in Rudyard, MT. They moved to Windham in 1952. John was the custodian, bus driver and grade school basketball coach at the Windham Grade School for four years. He and his family, which at the time included son, Randy, and daughter, Mary Jo, moved to Stanford in 1956, after purchasing the Petrolane and Union 76 Bulk Plants, a service station and plumbing shop. In 1959 he started farming and ranching in the Windham-Stanford area until retiring in 1998. He served on the Stanford School Board and belonged to the American Legion and Eagles Club in Lewistown. John thoroughly enjoyed his children and grandchildren, as well as working on his ranch. As most people will remember, John was an avid sports fan and attended as many girls' and boys' games as he could. Survivors include his wife, Emma Ridgeway; two daughters: Mary Jo (Gary) Day, of Miles City, and Susan Ridgeway, of Billings; two sons: Randal (Dawn) Ridgeway and Michael (Valerie) Ridgeway, both of Stanford; seven grandchildren: Robert Ridgeway, of Billings, Blake Ridgeway, of Chicago, IL, Ashley (Joel) Maart, of Duluth, MN, Brandon Ernst, of Missoula, Cole Mickelson, of Miles City, and Lucas and Lander Ridgeway, both of Stanford; two great-grandchildren: Titus and Nicholas Maart, both of Duluth, MN; his sister, Avis Perry, of Judith Gap; sister-in-law, Sylvan Ridgeway, of Lewistown; and his nieces and nephews: Jim, Chuck, Linda, Rod and Kent Ridgeway and Dick Perry. On Emma's side of the family, John is survived by two sisters-in-law: Irene (Cliff) Potter, of Sacramento, CA, and Joan Phillips of Swan Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Vivian Ridgeway; his brother, Russell Ridgeway; and a brother-in-law, Jack Perry. Graveside services with military honors are 11 a.m. March 4 in Stanford Cemetery, followed by a reception at noon at Stanford City Hall. Creel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, John's family suggests memorials to either the Stanford High School Boosters Club, or the Judith Basin County Ambulance. Published in Great Falls Tribune on February 25, 2010.
