He moved to the Calamus in Loup County at the age of 18. He was a hospitable person, was very fond of welcoming people to his house and entertaining them, usually through his music, which portrayed his outstanding sense of humor. He was quick of mind and could make decisions in a very short time. There was nothing small or petty about John. He did what he could for those deserving and was generous most of the time. In some instances it seemed that his generosity knew no boundries. An honest person, he meant what he said, and generally speaking was a friend that others valued. As a boy, youth, and man, he loved the out of doors and was a part of it, enjoying its treasures greatly. Rivers, hills and streams played a large part for hunting, fishing, and trapping throughout his life. An early riser when the mother earth was fresh, he found contentment in her beauty and all that she possessed, and spent hours watching wild animals in their natural habitat. His occupation as a masonary all of his working years put his talent to wise and constructive use. He liked to keep up on new developments in his particular field. His ability to use his critical faculities was well developed and sometimes startled others because of its accuracy. He was proud to teach his art to his sons, who have each followed this trade either as a way of living or as a hobby.
