Description	:	MY MOM I, Phoebe Delois, was born July 22, 1902 in Gering and my brother Delmer was born January 29, 1905. Read More	MY MOM I, Phoebe Delois, was born July 22, 1902 in Gering and my brother Delmer was born January 29, 1905. When Delmer was 8 months old, my Mother and my Aunt Susie Capper and we four kids took the train to Custer County. We stayed at my grandparents, William and Mary Stallings until Dad came. After Dad got his crops out, he and my uncle Ben Predmore drove to Custer County. It took them two weeks in the wagon. That was in 1905. From then on they farmed in several places, including Custer, Loup and Blaine counties. We grew up there and went to school at Sandy Ridge, and went to dances at Milburn and at family homes. Dad spent most of his life farming. I remember him putting up hay in the fall and sometimes I helped him. I drove the rake and did we ever make hay! All I can remember of that train trip, was looking out the window and there was a train on the siding and it looked like that big light was coming right at me. Mother said I crawled up on Aunt Susie's lap and went to sleep. And to this day I am not about to cross a train track, no mattter how far back the train is. Between 1905 and 1916, my folks had four more children, Altha (Predmore) Kline; Lovell Predmore; Johnnie Predmore and Minnie Dimples (Predmore) Britton. On March 19, 1938, my husband Ray Rittenhouse and I moved my folks to Gering where they bought a place at 1150 11th Street, where they lived until their deaths. Dad died in 1955 and Mother in 1961. Ray and I raised six children, four boys and two girls. In 1966 our youngest son, Leray, was drowned in Lake Minatare. Six of my parents eight kids are still living and every summer we have a Predmore Family Reunion and some of the old-timers come from all over. Although we had some sad times, I figure God has been good to us. Phoebe Rittenhouse **************************************************** FROM OBITUARY AND MINISTER'S SERMON: Phoebe Delois Rittenhouse was born the daughter of John Christian and Minnie Lee (Stallings) Predmore, being delivered in a Gering, Nebraska home, on July 22, 1902, by a pioneer Gering Doctor, Georgia Fix. She passed from this earth life on Monday, March 16, 1998 at her son Doyle's home in Gering, following a short stay in the hospital and nursing home. When Phoebe was three years old her family returned to their former home in Custer County. She spent her childhood in homes in Custer, Blaine and Loup County Nebraska. There was a sod house dwelling in at least one location. Schooling was in various places. Twice she went through the 11th grade in a country school -- graduating from high school would have required living in a town. She received a a teaching certificate and taught school for a time in Milburn, NE in 1922. Phoebe was united in marriage with Ray R. Rittenhouse of Taylor, NE on November 23, 1935, at Burwell. Thus began a marriage union of 62 years, ending at Ray's passing on September 19, 1997, at a Scottsbluff hospital. They made their home in Taylor, NE until 1941, when they moved to Gering, NE and remained here until their passing. Ray was a very hard worker and did many kinds of labor. At harvest time he picked potatoes and over 300 bushel day after day was the norm. In the early 40's he owned a little Model A truck and would load munure at the sale barn with a beet fork and deliver each load to customers for $1.00. He dug sewer ditches for one of the Gering plumbing companies; he demolished old buildings and sold the used material. He retired at the age of 65 as a Gering school janitor. Back in the late 30's he and Phoebe worked for the W.P.A. Ray worked on road projects and Phoebe was a seamstress. Phoebe was in charge of the nursery at the bowling alley in Gering for a time; worked in a cafe or two; sorted potatoes; foster grandparenting and organized the Wide-Awake-Club, which was a quilting club. She loved to crochet and made afghans for all children, grand-children and great-grandchildren. She was still crocheting a day or two before her passing. Quilting and crocheting were special accomplishments and many have been blessed with her skills. She loved the out-of-doors as well as the home environment. She liked camping and fishing. She saw many changes in nearly a century of time. She rode on a train, an early bi-plane, horses amd her sons motorcycle She witnessed the days of the horse and buggy to flight in space. She loved to write and composed many a poem. Her cream pitcher collection totaled 637. She labeled everyone of them. She was the geneologist in the family. The family remembers so many features of her loving life and all agree, "SHE HAD LOTS OF CLASS". She was kind and forgiving, deeply interested in all the family and sought to develop family closeness. She made sure there was a "PREDMORE PICNIC" every summer for more than 40 years. She was a member of The Central Church of Christ in Gering and the Wide-Awake-Club. She leaves to mourn her passing, son and daughter-in-law Jerome "Jerry" and Mary Alexander of Denver, CO; son and daughter-in-law Forrest "Brick" and Mary Thompson of Gering; son Doyle "Dude" Thompson of Gering; daughter and son-in-law Raymona and Larry Williams of Dix; daughter Donna Rittenhouse of Gering; brother and sister-in-law Lovell and Opal Predmore of Lusk, WY; sister Minnie Dimples (Predmore) Britton of Gering; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren and many more relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her parents; a son, Loren Leray "Sonny" Rittenhouse; a grandson, Loren LeRay Rittenhouse, Jr.; three brothers, Guy, John and Del Predmore; two sisters, Grace (Predmore) Mackrill and Altha (Predmore) Kline; and a daughter-in-law,(Doyle's wife) Betty (Blanton) Thompson.
